Cape Philharmonic Orchestra: November 2012

The new season of symphony concerts from the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra includes music by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Berlioz, Brahms, Prokofiev, Debussy, and a Beethoven symphony you can only really appreciate once you've heard it performed live.

Thursday 1 November
Conducted by Nicholas Cleobury and featuring cellist Peter Martens as soloist, this performance will include:

  • "The Magic Flute" Overture K. 620 by Mozart
  • Cello Concerto by Allan Stephenson
  • Symphony No. 3 in A minor ("Scottish"), Op. 56 by Mendelssohn

Thursday 8 November

Conducted by Nicholas Cleobury and featuring a range of soloists, this performance will include:

  • Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37 by Beethoven (soloist Konstantin Scherbakov)
  • Symphony No. 9 in D minor ("Choral"), Op. 125 by Beethoven (soloists Arlene Jaftha, Elizabeth Frandsen, Lukhanyo Moyake, and Thatho Machona together with the New Apostolic Church Choir)

Thursday 15 November

Conducted by Conrad van Alphen and featuring violinist Alexander Gilman as soloist, this performance will include:

  • Academic Festival Overture, Op. 80 by Brahms
  • Violin Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 63 by Prokofiev
  • Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68 by Brahms

Thursday 22 November

Conducted by Conrad van Alphen and featuring pianist Inon Barnatan as soloist, this performance will include:

  • Le Corsaire Overture, Op. 21 by Berlioz
  • Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 22, by Saint-Saëns
  • Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune by Debussy
  • La Mer by Debussy
