UCKG's Women in Action drive 16 Days of Activism through interactive projects

Gauteng Legislature's Director of Communications, Ms Jackie Nxasana, said that Women in Action were identified as a key stakeholder as part of the government's Public Participation process because their numerous effective campaigns contribute significantly to public awareness and community upliftment. This year the South African Government adopted the motto: "Don't look away. Act against Abuse" and WiA contributes towards this by creating awareness, highlighting the negative impact of abuse and offering support for survivors through their on-going initiatives. She said: "Gauteng Legislature's theme is to take the legislature to the people. Working with reputable organisations we can extend our reach into the wider community."

Exhibiting alongside the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) and some Government Departments, empowerment groups and independent organisations, WiA handed out white ribbons as symbols of peace and commitment by the wearer never to commit or condone violence against women and children.

Trained counsellors offered information on HIV/Aids, cancer and abuse to more than 100 visitors to the display. Visitors received information on awareness and treatment options with gratitude and many were referred to clinics for assessment and treatment while others were invited to attend support groups for cancer patients (It's all about you) and abuse (Save a Tamar).
