Charity dinner promises celebrity chefs, staple foods
The annual Celebrity Chefs Challenge Dinner will feature them recreating a six-course gourmet meal from the association's basic staples such samp and beans, soya mince and pilchards. It takes place on Saturday 29 September 2012 at The Granger Bay Hotel School Restaurant in Mouille Point, Cape Town.
Each chef has pre-selected ingredients from the current PSFA menu, the same menu that feeds over 326 600 learners every school day, in over 740 schools in the Western Cape.
Riffel has been tasked with main course this year using only soya mince, rice, cabbage and apples. Janse, executive chef at Le Quartier Francais, on the other hand will trade in her 'Confit Guineafowl Rillette' to create a masterpiece from her selection of samp and beans, butternut and breyani spices.
Joint collaboration
The chefs will do a joint collaboration for the starter and dessert course, while Jewel will be making what he claims will be the evening's 'crown jewel' - an exciting pilchard inspired dish. Doherty is this year's debutante and is keen to put his signature on his selection of traditional baked beans and fresh fruit.
The annual dinner is another component of the association's daily quest to raise funds to combat the problem of hunger in schools and is becoming a highlight on its event calendar. Last year's event raised over R170 000, feeding over 450 learners for an entire year. The hope is to increase that total this year.
