Dispute between NUM and AMCU leads to wildcat strike

South African gold miner Village Main Reef said a wildcat strike erupted at its Blyvooruitzicht operation, Moneyweb reports.

The Johannesburg-based company said in a statement that a dispute between the members and leadership of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Association of Mining and Construction Workers Union (AMCU) led to the strike. Village will seek an injunction to declare the strike illegal and issued today a first ultimatum for workers to return, it said.

Union rivalry and strikes for higher pay halted, between August and November, operations in South African platinum and gold mines. In September, Lonmin Plc workers ended a six-week strike after winning pay gains of 11 percent to 22 percent. According to Moneyweb, AMCU members in striking mine at the expense of the dominant NUM.
