The 8km trip between the University of Cape Town and Long Street would be R60 on UberX and R100 on UberBlack, while a trip to the airport from the Cape Town International Convention Centre could cost about R140, Uber Cape Town's General Manager Anthony le Roux said.

A metered taxi from the airport to the city centre can costs between R300 and R400, according to Cape Town Tourism's website.

The launch of the budget service comes a day after protests in Europe saw metered taxis blocking the streets of cities such as London, Paris and Milan. The service operates in 128 cities across the world.
