CECAFA tournament promotes hand-washing campaign

According to Allafrica.com, the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) has partnered with German non-profit organisation WASH United to use the positive influence of sport in order to promote hand washing with soap, under the "Protecting the Beautiful Game" banner, during the 2012 tournament currently ongoing in Uganda's capital, Kampala.

Hand-washing with soap, WASH United says, is by far the most cost effective intervention to prevent diarrhoea, one of the leading causes of child deaths in Africa. Diarrhoea resulting from a lack of toilets and poor hygiene has now overtaken pneumonia to become the biggest killer of children in Sub-Saharan Africa.

During the tournament, the partners will reach out to millions of football fans, both through television as well as in the stadium, and seek to raise awareness for the campaign. The initiative is being supported by all the 12 participating national teams, Allafrica.com reports.
