In the Chemical Manufacturing category, Engen Refinery was the overall winner for the second time running; and for cleaner production - a new category. In addition, Enref received a gold certificate in a waste management audit which was carried out as part of the awards.

Sandra Redelinghuys, Engen's corporate manager for Environmental Management, says Enref was noted for its waste management and recycling efforts, emission reduction, staff commitment to waste management, as well as leak detection and repair interventions.

Service Industry awards

Engen also won two awards in the Service Industry category. 45th Cutting, an Engen service station in Durban, took silver in the Newcomer Stakes and placed second overall in the Service Industry. The service station's dealer-manager, Richard Critchlow, received a special merit award for personal contribution to waste management, and for the environmental performance of the service station.

"We are proud to have done well in both categories we entered," says Redelinghuys. "The KZN Waste Management Awards is a very prestigious and tightly-contested event, and the petrochemical industry has particularly stringent environmental and operating conditions." The award reaffirms Engen's commitment in the areas of waste and the environment, and Engen will continue to grow its contribution in both regards.
