Things get wild in Turkish department storeDirector Michael Buckley from Frieze Films was recently assigned a job by a Turkish department store - Boyner, to direct a commercial that shows wild animals including a giraffe, zebra, crocodile and a peacock walking through the various departments within the store. "We were faced with two options - shoot the entire commercial in Turkey, with the animals in a studio or shoot the animals in South Africa, the rest of the commercial in Turkey and then to put it all together in post production. We decided on the second option as it was much easier to shoot the animals in South Africa, in their natural habitat where they were not distressed and could give a better performance. The animals were also in better condition as they were not kept in captivity," says Buckley. The shoot was not without its challenges. When the crew went to recce the animals prior to the shoot, the peacock gave a great display of its beauty and proudly fanned its tail feathers out. On the day of the shoot, it got stage fright and refused to cooperate. Eventually after trying to coax it with a peahen, food and words of encouragement, the staff at the farm suggested putting guinea pigs into the enclosure. Luckily, the peacock was duly impressed with this and fluffed out its tail feathers accordingly. Buckley adds: "It was the first time I had worked in Turkey and I was impressed by the levels of professionalism with the crew, the quality of their equipment and the post production facilities they had." This is the second job that Frieze Films have done for ANS and they are currently pitching on others. Editorial contact Renee Schonborn Tel: 011 886 5434 More from Frieze Films' press office
