Lesotho now available in Google Street View

Wherever you want to go, Google Maps can take you there - and now Street View can show you around 50 countries globally. Since 2007, the Google Maps Street View feature has enabled people around the world to continue exploring 360-degree panoramic imagery. And now, Lesotho can also be found on Google Street View.

Street View adds another dimension to Google Maps, allowing Google users to navigate through neighbourhoods, cities or countries from the comfort of a PC or smartphone. Remote locations across the globe have been added to Google Maps, including paths up Mount Everest, vines of the Amazon Rainforest and even the Heron Island on the Great Barrier Reef.

Now, with Lesotho being the third African country to be "put on the map", more users can experience the evolution that has taken place in creating an interactive experience of the country from a simple base map. This imagery is available to anyone with an Internet connection to discover, explore and enjoy.

Implementing innovative ways

Over the past six years, Google has built a variety of vehicles customised to collect imagery for Google Maps. From the Street View Car, to the Trike, to the Trolley (for places like art museums), to the Snowmobile, to the Tripod (for business interiors), and now to the Trekker (for locations like the Grand Canyon that just went live recently). Google is constantly implementing innovative ways to bring the most comprehensive, accurate and usable maps to everyone on every continent - allowing users to visually preview places before they go, or virtually experience places they might never have the opportunity to visit in person.

In addition, Google has introduced a schools mapping initiative to South Africa: encouraging and the effective use of online mapping, most recently with learners in Heidelberg. The project works towards teaching learners and teachers how to use online maps for education and in their everyday lives.
