One of the most moving and important novels to emerge from South Africa, Alan Paton's legendary
Cry the Beloved Country, comes to the stage at Cape Town's Artscape this month. Taking the form of a musical,
Lost in the Stars brilliantly combines jazz, blues, folk music and spirituals with classically styled arias to tell the stirring story of two ageing fathers - one black and the other white - who are brought together by a shared grief. 22 Nov 2011

Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio) is a
Singspiel (a German comic opera with spoken dialogue) in three acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The plot concerns the attempts of the hero Belmonte (with the help of his servant Pedrillo) to rescue his beloved, Konstanze, from the seraglio of the Pasha Selim. Sung in German, with English surtitles projected above the stage and English dialogue (in a quirky new translation by Francesco Nassimbeni), the work is generally light-hearted, though Mozart's elaborate score varies the tone of the work from broad comedy to exquisite pathos. 4 Nov 2011
