On a scale of one to thousands

The chances for a leukaemia patient finding a stem cell match has been estimated to be 1 in 100 000. This would mean a 90 year old would have had to have met 1 person every 8 hours, from the day they were born, to reach this precise number. It is this particular insight that inspired the concept for The Sunflower Fund's 1in100 000 campaign, created by The Jupiter Drawing Room (Cape Town), which is aimed at creating awareness around the difficulty of one patient finding a donor but is also directed towards raising funds for the bone marrow stem cell research.

"To illustrate the odds of one patient finding a donor, we have challenged DJ Fresh to 'meet' 100 000 people online within 1000 hours leading up to The Sunflower Fund National Bandana Day on 12 October 2010." explains The Jupiter Drawing Room (Cape Town), Design Director, Joanne Thomas.

So far the campaign has reached over five thousand people but more numbers are needed. To participate, visit www.1in100000.co.za and 'meet' DJ Fresh by simply adding your details. Any monetary donations can be made by SMSing the amount to 38028 (R10 per sms) or by sponsoring DJ Fresh for every person he meets. "We are also encouraging everyone to buy The Sunflower Fund bandanas, which are available at any Pick 'n Pay or BP Express Stores, and wear them on the National Bandana Day 12 October to show their support," says Thomas.
