Bevan Cullinan keeps comedy alive in new Yogi ad

Fresh Eye Film Productions Director Bevan Cullinan had a great time directing a Yogi Sip commercial that features what is supposed to look like a music video with an Afrikaans wanna-be pop singer trying to give a sexy performance with suggestive porn movements. This is the first in a series of comedic executions, conceptualised by Y&R, to announce a Yogi Sip MTV promotion.
The Afrikaans “stud's” performance is interrupted by a voice saying he's definitely not going to the MTV Europe music awards - but you (the viewer) could be. Clever animation, by Frank Weber from The Deli, accompanies the explanation on how to win four tickets to the awards - found on every bottle of the new exotic fruit Yogi Sip.

Discussing casting Cullinan says, “There is always a very fine line between someone who can give an authentic performance and finding someone that is authentically funny.” He believes the secret to getting a good performance out of someone is to make sure that you do not play for comedy.

“It was fun shooting a commercial that is supposed to look like a music video,” says Cullinan who is known for his impeccable comedic timing. “It was very important to retain the authenticity of the execution if you want to realise the humour. It is way funnier to get good production value on a bad performance genre. Much like a poorly executed and stereotypical South African music video that doesn't quite hit the mark.”
