The Scorpions sharpen their sting...

It was six o'clock on a Thursday evening and the Monsoon Lagoon was buzzing with worn out Scorpions ending off their three-day national conference. The ‘grand finale' was a Learning Theatre Production about a day in the life of a Scorpion...

Coco Merkel and Sandra Vaughn on a stake-out.
The thirty-minute performance captured the essence of ‘Scorpion Living' and it soon had the audience roaring with laughter. As the plot unfolded and more and more characters were recognised, the audience were cheering and egging the performers on.

All Learning Theatre Productions are specifically designed to mirror the employees in an organisation, their daily struggles and accomplishments, and finally the cultural context within which everything happens.

By looking at the reflection of your everyday life at work you become aware of small things that you miss through the course of each day. You once again become aware of the value that you add to your office, the extreme accomplishments that you never expected credit for, the mistakes that seemed so massive at the time, the cup of coffee that a colleague brought on that day that you really needed it! It makes you proud to be a part of that office, that atmosphere, that environment and that daily struggle.

The object of the intervention was to help the members of the Scorpions to reflect on their performance during the past five years, to celebrate their successes and to learn from the mistakes made during this time. And judging from the buzz in the audience after the performance, these objectives were ably addressed by the performers.

Law enforcement brings with it unique challenges and stresses, sometimes to breaking point. The Learning Theatre managed to portray all these issues, without opening any scars, while still staying true to the essence of the organisation.

Two unique organisations in concert:- The Learning Theatre and the Scorpions. What a combination!
