[The Digital Edge] Mobile in South Africa

SA's digital marketing voice takes a two-part look into the mobile industry in South Africa to understand the technology and the marketing behind the industry.
While the exact numbers are fuzzy, there are some researchers saying that there are more cellphones than people in South Africa. With broadband penetration and the distribution of computers criminally low, a mobile phone is the only way most of our population will ever see the Internet. And many millions are seeing it that way daily.

In the first of a two-part series we look at the technology behind mobile services. We speak to Vincent Maher of “The Grid”, a Vodacom created mobile social network. We also speak to Colin Daniels of The Times to learn about their mobile service. Other guests include David Reynders of Pocit, a mobile payment gateway. Finally we are joined by Stefano Sessa, the man behind the 24.com iPhone application.
