The highly successful and entertaining Sony Fevapitch Soccer series came to a close when the finals were held at Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton, on 26 November.
Mr Kenichi Sugawara, GM of the Brand Management Division at Sony Corporation, handed the trophy to Richard Walker, Captain of the Randburg Rangers. Zakumi, the FIFA 2010 World Cup mascot, shared the moment.
Volcano Advertising and Octagon Marketing, Sony's lead activation agencies in the 2010 Football World Cup FIFA sponsorship, and in association with Sony SA, were responsible for the planning, organising and execution of the project.
As an Official Partner for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, Sony initiated the Fevapitch tournament in 2007, heightening the awareness of its participation in South African football and bringing greater entertainment and excitement to the game. Based on Five-a-Side rules, 24 amateur teams participated in each regional event, allowing the players to display their ball skills, passion and enthusiasm.
To add greater glamour and public interest to the tournament, Sony selected a celebrity team of ex-Bafana Bafana players to square up as the Sony All-Stars against teams comprising popular TV celebrities and the media. The Sony All-Stars included Neil Tovey, Mark Fish, Doctor Khumalo, Steve Crowley, Mark Williams, Mark Batchelor and Bashin Mahlangu.
Ten amateur teams competed in the finals of this year's tournament, kicking off with provincial tournaments in Durban, Rustenburg, Cape Town, Bloemfontein and Gauteng. The two teams that reached the final at each of the provincial events went through to participate in the national finals.
Randburg Rangers were crowned the Sony Fevapitch 2008 Champions after they beat Tamasa 1-0 in extra time in a close and evenly contested match.
Fevapitch is an annual event in the lead up to 2010 FIFA World Cup™. It is envisaged that next year's Sony Fevapitch tournament will run in tandem with the FIFA Confederations Cup.
