South African films impress at international festivals

The year's ongoing romance between International Film Festival audiences and films from Africa continued this month with the Sydney Film Festival announcement that three of the top six Sydney Festival Urban Cinefile Audience Choice Awards were films produced by African directors telling African stories.
All three films were chosen by popular audience vote in the World Cinema category.

The three films were the South African films Forgiveness, directed by Ian Gabriel, Yesterday, directed by Darrell Roodt, and the Sengallese film Moolaade, directed by Ousmane Sembene.

Across the world at the Jerusalem International Film Festival, Forgiveness was singled out for a Special Mention for the Wim van Leer "Spirit of Freedom" Award. The award is presented annually for feature films or documentaries "best exploring man's eternal quest for freedom across the world".

In London Portobello Pictures have secured the rights to present Forgiveness as a stage play to theatre audiences. The script for Forgiveness was written by Greg Latter. The lead role in the film of a disgraced apartheid cop is played by US based South African actor Arnold Vosloo.

Forgiveness is available on DVD through Kalahari.net.
