The challenge was to create an urban West African city feel in a South Africa urban centre, Art Director Leon Morland with director Ian Gabriel and cinematographer Vicci Turpin decided to add a palette of bright distressed colours to convey the West African mood and tonality. “By skipping the bleach process during neg development we embedded the colours beautifully into the gritty urban textures of the cityscapes we were filming.
“This was all part of the signature we wanted to give the Malta brand. The light and colour were always authentic and vibrantly West African in style and atmosphere.”
“We cast a lot of the background extras and featured artists out of the large Central and West Africa ex-pat community living in and around South African urban centres. All of this contributed to the authenticity of the spot,” said producer Kirsten Clarence. “Most importantly as always with Ian's direction was the off the cuff spontaneity of the performance and the incredible unaided free flying stunts performed by Blue.”
The Giant Films commercial was Creative Director Leon Jacobs' swansong at Saatchi Cape Town before his departure to take up an exciting new creative position in Hong Kong.
The creative team on the job were Hanile Kriel and Katherine Black.
