Between January 2010 and September 2012, poachers have butchered 1,120 rhinos in South Africa alone.
Stick, the Johannesburg-based communication ideas company, and their client Rand Merchant Bank felt so strongly about the plight of these wonderful creatures that together they agreed to get involved. They approached RAGE (a LeadSA initiative aimed at responsibly collecting and channeling Rhino action funds and activities) with an idea and a desire to raise awareness and money.
The idea was to stir corporate emotions and ask business in South Africa to work together with RMB to add substantial financial support to the RAGE initiative.
Stick created a visually impactful, but extremely disturbing image of an impala with a false rhino horn strapped onto its face (suggesting that nothing we do will bring them back when they're extinct) together with a headline suggesting that only 'working together we could prevent the unthinkable from becoming a reality'.
Rand Merchant Bank generously made available the prominent billboard sign on the side of their building in Bute Lane and 702 Talk Radio offered substantial 'talktime' to promote the idea. Corporate South Africa was then challenged to cover up this image with their collective logos in return for a financial contribution.
The companies that stepped up to the challenge include RMB and the FirstRand Volunteers, Rustenberg Wines, Remgro Limited, DLA Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr, Symrise, the Eris Property Group, Momentum, PPC Cement, CNBC Africa, AVIS, JoJo Tanks, DStv, Tracker, Karabina and eBucks. These companies have indeed worked together to prevent the unthinkable from becoming a reality.
The initiative enjoyed the support of both companies and individuals alike - raising close to R5-million for the ongoing fight.
