A birthday celebration for the underprivileged; iGroup and Hoopla Creative give 67 minutes

Staff from the Johannesburg-based e-commerce web development company iGroup and its subsidiary digital agency, Hoopla Creative, spent the morning of 18 July giving underprivileged children a birthday celebration in honour of Nelson Mandela. Pre-school children from the Tshepang Programme for Orphaned and Vulnerable children were treated to a birthday celebration with balloon animals, face-painting and a table laden with cake and other party treats.
"The centre we visited today has not had the budget to have birthday parties for any of the children this year," said iGroup's Digital Marketing Manager, Hajira Amla. "By celebrating Madiba's birthday with them, we hoped to live up to Nelson Mandela's legacy and show these children that each one of them is important and cared for. iGroup is passionate about South Africa's potential and wanted to find a way to give back."

Hoopla Creative provided party food for the pre-school children and made up special party packs for each of the 290 school-going children who visit the centre after school to get something to eat - often their only meal of the day.

"Along with the party food and activities, iGroup handed over a R3 000 gift card to the centre for groceries which we felt would be a positive contribution to the centre," Amla said. "But the connection we made with the children, who were so happy to have fun with us, was something that the team who participated in this event will never forget. Each child had a powerful impact on us and we were truly sorry to leave them and go back to the office!"

"The team was really impressed by the work that the Tshepang centre does. With the assistance and support of Clover Mama Afrika, Clover SA's CSI project, Mama Zakhe has been able to teach valuable skills to the community in the informal settlement of Princess as well as help the orphaned and vulnerable children in the area," said Miralda de Waal, co-owner of Hoopla Creative. "Today's activities helped us to remember that there is so much to be done and that every one of us can look at Nelson Mandela's legacy and be inspired to make a difference, no matter how big or small."
