Platypus Productions' director Ian Chuter recently accompanied celebrity chefs Bill Granger and Justin Bonello around Southern Africa to film four commercials about their quest to find the source of good food.
Woolworths' Good Food Journey took them to The Natal Midlands for Ayrshire Dairy, Namibia for free range steak, The Kruger National Park for braai and to Limpopo to explore Woolworth's sustainable Farming for the Future methods.
"Working with Bill and Justin was fantastic," says Ian. "They're real pros, with no airs and graces."
He says the most challenging part of the shoot was Namibia. "We were out at sunrise on this 500 acre farm trying to find cows to shoot; free range really does mean that they're all over the place."
Ian is one of South Africa's busiest food specialists, with a distinctive, fresh style. He combines his uncomplicated approach to filmmaking with his performance experience to craft films that are beautiful to look at, full of texture, honest and unpretentious.
"You can tell a Woolworth food ad straight away," he says. "I've focused on making their ads feel sincere, natural and effortless."
Since founding Platypus in 1992, Ian has shot every food category, from meat to dairy, soup to fresh produce. He is as comfortable working with children and real people as he is with experienced actors.
Platypus is based in Cape Town, which was recently voted The World's Best Destination by TripAdvisor for 2011, not least because it's a food mecca full of wine farms, fresh seafood, and some of the best restaurants in the world. With dedicated tabletop studios, an award-winning film industry and first world infrastructure, Cape Town is the perfect place to both feast and film food.
Ian studied film, television and drama in the UK and has directed all over the globe. One of six directors represented by Platypus, Ian is available to shoot in South Africa or wherever in the world you may need him.
