New directing talent joins Platypus

Directors Michael Buckley, Vicci Turpin and Fiona Macpherson have joined Platypus Productions for commercials representation.
Vicci and Michael are two of South Africa's most respected directors of photography, but both also have a wealth of experience in the director's chair.

Vicci's directing showreel includes local work for Johnny Walker, Woolworths, Femina, Pampers, Revlon and IAMS Cat Food, as well as a massive global campaign for Bio Oil.

"Vicci's shot some of South Africa's most beautiful ads for directors like Ian Gabriel, so I knew her directing reel would be visually compelling," says Platypus Production's Diana Keam. "But I've been so impressed by her ability to craft performances, from both adults and children. As a cinematographer, she's filmed Charlize Theron, Ben Kingsley and Cristiano Ronaldo, so she really understands working with celebrities."

Michael worked as a DOP since the early 80s for top directors like Smuggler's Filip Engstrom, Rabbitt's Brent Harris and Egg's Terence Neale. He's directed commercials and music videos in North America; for global brands like Korean Air and UBS; and locally for the likes of Investec, LG and Magnum.

"Michael has a unique creativity," says Diana. "He paints with light creating sensual and beautiful images."

Best known as one of South Africa's top beauty photographers, Fiona is also an experienced commercials director for both the local and international market.
She's directed ads for Lux, Revlon, FNB, Sanlam and Emirates, working with celebrities like Krista Allen and Basetsana Kumalo. Fiona won the Golden Horn for cinematography for the multi-award-winning short And There in the Dust.

Her astounding collaborative exhibition, Pony Express, blurred the boundaries of photography and design during its extended run at The Photographer's Gallery in Cape Town earlier this year. "It really is incredible," says Diana. "It shows that, with all her experience, Fiona is still pushing boundaries and at the frontline of South African creativity. Make sure you see it when it reaches Johannesburg."

Vicci, Michael and Fiona join Platypus' existing stable of Ian Chuter, Renee van Reenen, and legendary Indian director Prakash Varma.

Founded in 1992, Platypus Productions is one of most established commercial production companies in South Africa but is enjoying a new lease on life since their Vodafone Zoo Zoo campaign became a global phenomenon.

Representing directors Ian Chuter, Prakash Varma, Vicci Turpin, Michael Buckley, Fiona Macpherson, and Renee van Reenen, Platypus offers a full-service creative solution for any board, from production to postproduction.
