UCKG Athletic Club invites youth to start walking, get running and stay healthy

As part of its ongoing commitment to uplifting the quality of life for young people in South Africa, the UCKG Athletic Club is hosting a fitness challenge on 23 June 2012 at the Wembley Stadium in Johannesburg.
A four and eight kilometre fun run starts at 08:00 with participants completing one or two laps of the course. After the prize-giving and presentations, runners and spectators will be organised into teams to play soccer, netball and basketball. The winning soccer team will play against the Pirates Club junior team for a floating trophy. There will also be floating trophies for winners of the basketball and netball tournaments.

The physical and emotional benefits of regular exercise are well known, but unfortunately many people do not have access to sports and recreational facilities. Responding to this need, the UCKG Athletic Club was founded in 2008, to provide a safe environment and an alternative to wasting after-school hours on the streets. The club has a growing membership of athletes from nine to 62 years who participate in track and field as well as cross country and endurance events. Internationally acclaimed athlete, Argentina Senda, is the club's head coach with support from South African Masters Champion, Onica Motsei and others.

UCKG has recognised the importance of private organisations supporting government's strategic objective of: "A long and healthy life for all South Africans". This is the second formal event which UCKG has organised to help promote the Department of Health's strategic vision of improving the quality of people's lives through good nutrition and exercise. The first was held at the Cenacle of Faith in Soweto to mark Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Day on 17 February 2012.

The fun run complies with the rules of Athletics South Africa (ASA) and Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) and offers medals to the first 500 finishers in each of the two distances as well as a number of spot prizes. Entry fee for the four kilometre run is R30 and R40 for the eight kilometre run. Members of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) enjoy a reduced entry fee of R20 to participate.
