The importance of an SEO strategy

A large number of websites, whether corporate based or in the SME market, struggle with the same problem - the website looks great, it has, if not good then at least adequate content, but it suffers from a major lack of response and visitors.
We get constant complaints from companies and individuals about their websites that are ‘not performing'.

The major reason behind this malaise is that the company or individual does not have an SEO strategy in place.

These days it is not enough to just have a website. A website on its own is like building a shop somewhere in the desert and expecting people to miraculously find their way to it. An SEO strategy will put the roadmap in place to ensure that your website gets the exposure it deserves on the Internet.

The problem is that the days when it was enough to put up a website, make some minor tweaks to the meta tags and suddenly the site pops up at the top of the search engines, are long gone.

The Internet is an extremely competitive place and there ARE only 10 positions on the first page of Google. Getting to that first page can make the difference between having an adequate website and having your business explode by getting a fantastic response from enquiries generated through the search engines.

Even if you are a big corporate with little need to be at the top of the search engines to draw in new business, your website, as well as what is being said about you in the search engines results, is being used to evaluate your company's trustworthiness and has an impact on your reputation.

If you are a smaller company then not being on the first page of Google will make you lose out on a tremendous amount of business opportunities. More and more people are using the Internet to look for products and services. With the installation of the new sets of cables offering increased broadband capabilities in the next few years, the number of Internet users will only increase. Using the Internet to advertise your products and services also opens up opportunities into Africa and the rest of the world that traditional media advertising is unlikely to give you.

The question is: Will they find YOU if they look for a specific product or service that you offer? The increase in spend in online advertising has increased with a tremendous 30% last year - which means that if you are not spending on online advertising, your competitors are and THEY are the ones that are getting the exposure on the Internet that a website alone cannot provide you.
