Heat Hot 100: Oscar Pistorius crowned as king of celebville

A record-breaking 635 913 votes (more than double than in 2010) received in heat magazine's annual reader-driven poll, the heat Hot 100, have revealed that South Africa's favourite celebrity is sport star and international model, Oscar Pistorius. Music sensation twins Brian and Andrew Chaplin, better known as Locnville, claimed the top spot in 2010 (ranking at #10 this year) after Ryk Neethling was the first local celebrity to win the title in both 2008 and 2009. This year Neethling beat the twins again, coming in one position ahead of them at #9.

Apart from Locnville, another pair of twins jointly stole the hearts of voters this year with reality-TV stars Hlelo and Ntando Masina (Blame it on Fame) voted into the fourth position, making them the second most popular local celebs this year.

Commenting on winning the prestigious title, Pretorius stated: "It's really cool! It caught me totally off-guard and I was really surprised. It's an honour as I regard heat to be an amazing magazine. If I had one word to describe my reaction, I'd say gobsmacked!"

Pretorius believes that winning the heat Hot 100 title will have a positive impact on his life and career. "It definitely adds more weight to the different projects I'm involved in. The title also gives me more credibility when it comes to my involvement in charitable causes."

The highest ranking international celebrity was Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds, who claimed the runner-up spot this year. The heat Hot 100 poll does not differentiate between local and international stars - simply asking heat readers to vote for their favourite celebrities. Local celebrities remain firm favourites however with 28% of SA's very own celebville residents voted onto the heat Hot 100 list this year.

Melinda Shaw, editor in chief of heat magazine, says: "We're thrilled with Oscar as our worthy overall winner, but we weren't totally surprised that heat readers singled him out. 2011 has really been Oscar's year - he's been everywhere; not only shining on the track, but also looking hotter than ever."

Shaw says that if you search his name on Twitter, there are so many comments in languages other than English, which proves how he has captured the imagination of the world now. "What other celeb can boast becoming an international model, with that superhot Thierry Mugler A*Men campaign, and making history as the first disabled athlete to qualify for the Olympic Games? What a worthy winner of the heat Hot 100 title!" she says.

South Africa's favourite celebrities are those who have mastered their acting skills, with almost half (48%) of the top 100 either starring in movies or television shows. Musicians in turn made up 24% of the top 100, while heat readers voted 12% of models and reality TV stars onto the sought-after list. A whopping 16% of sports stars also featured this year.
