Aerial Displays takes MTN to new heights with Maponya Mall balloon

MTN has once again taken its name where no other brand can reach with the recent branding of the giant aerial balloon at Soweto's Maponya Mall. The large-scale installation is the biggest advertising medium in the south of Johannesburg and affords the cellular brand unrivalled exposure amongst its target customers.

MTN balloon
The Maponya Mall balloon is one of just 23 balloons of its kind throughout the world and one of only three such outdoor media to be launched in South Africa. Owned and operated by Aerial Displays, the balloon not only forms a large scale, high impact advertising medium, it also provides an entertaining ride for visitors wishing to view the Johannesburg skyline. With the popularity of the Maponya Mall shopping centre and the ever-increasing volume of tourism to the Soweto area, it comes as no surprise that the balloon has hosted more thousands of passengers since its launch three years ago.

Commenting on the new advertising initiative, MTN chief marketing officer, Serame Taukobong says, "Being the proud sponsors of the Maponya Mall balloon is not only about brand presence for MTN, but about the provision of a social activity for our customers. In our view Soweto is Gauteng's most important tourist area and what a better way to ensure a holistic experience than by affording South Africans a view of Soweto from an unrivalled perspective? Our balloon serves as a message of gratitude for the Ayoba support we have received from the Soweto community and, more importantly, it provides a service that enables a greater experience to those that visit Soweto."

Aerial Displays managing director Francis Chickasha adds, "MTN has managed to make its brand a permanent part of the Johannesburg skyline in one of the country's most popular retail and tourist locations. Anyone within a 15-kilometre radius of the yellow MTN-branded balloon will be able to see their brand ensuring unrivalled brand exposure."

Ends Taukobong, "Because of the unique nature of the medium, the MTN brand has certainly garnered a great deal of attention. Most importantly, however, we have been overwhelmed by the huge amount of positive feedback we have received from our consumers and the communities surrounding Maponya Mall. And these are of course the people who matter to us most."

Commenting on the MTN balloon project, Graffiti managing director John Rice added, "South African-owned Aerial Displays is the biggest operator of helium passenger balloons in the world and Graffiti is proud to be associated with such a world class operation."

A multi-faceted media company and best-known as the leading vehicle branding company in South Africa, Graffiti is also the branding partner of Aerial Displays.
