The ECHO for Children Foundation, in conjunction with Vanilla Concrete Design and Manufacturing Studio and Eikestad Plumbing, joined forces in what has been the Foundation's most challenging project to date.
Lilitha, a small, non-profit crèche based in Kraaifontein, is run by Nobambo Nakani who started the project in 2007 from her own bedroom. Approximately 47 children, aged between 2-7 years old, attend Lilitha every day. Despite the monthly running costs, the crèche is non-funded and is entirely reliant on donations.
"The ECHO for Children Foundation oversaw the installation of the ceiling, the construction of an outdoor playground area layered with astroturf and complete with a shade port, painting of the floor space and the wall interiors and a total plumbing overhaul to include the installation of two brand new toilets and a kitchen unit. A highlight for Nobambo was the new blackboard, painted directly onto the wall, and ready for use whilst the children found immediate joy in the outdoor playground," said Gemma Spickernell of the ECHO for Children Foundation.
"The crèche has grown from an informal structure with inadequate plumbing facilities, a leaking roof and no form of insulation and a non-existent playground area, to a place of comfort and practicality - something more in line with what Nobambo and her team deserve for the amazing work they do on a daily basis," said Gemma.
ECHO Events has coordinated various charity related events during the course of the 2012 year and the funds raised were put towards this project amongst others supported by the Foundation.
A huge thank you is extended to both Vanilla Concrete and Eikestad Plumbing who assisted in the two-day overhaul and to all those who donated items towards the revamp.
