Presented by Africa Centre, the Spier Contemporary, South Africa's largest biennial art exhibition, officially opened on the 13 of March 2010 at the City Hall in Cape Town. This extraordinary exhibition provides artists living in the country with an open platform to create and show new work, which reflects both the breadth and depth of the South African experience. ECHO Events were the proud event organisers.
To mark this occasion, six hundred guests including art celebrities and media assembled outside the City Hall. The facade of the City Hall created a momentous backdrop for the operetta and speeches made from the balcony before the exhibition was officially opened. The audience were the first to be invited see the Spier Contemporary 2010 Exhibition and share in the celebration of art in the Mother City.
Guest were ushered up the grand marble staircases and as they perused the extraordinary art on show, they were offered more exceptional Spier wine and creative taste sensations. Strong themes, which emerged from the work, included a search for identity, examination of the state, lack of faith in our leadership, FIFA World Cup representation and interpretations of urban landscapes. Winners were announced at the awards ceremony while media cameras flashed and heightened this prestigious scene.
Guests were asked to stay and enjoy in the celebrations that proceeded amongst the art work.
