So Gen Z is moving into the workplace - What now?The world's attention has been held captive by the omnipresent millennial generation with their ‘quit my job and pursue my dreams' mentality. What we haven't noticed is the younger sibling at the table, wise from watching. Gen Z, otherwise known as iGen, have extremely different ideas of what they want their lives to look like. Having been born anywhere from 1996s/early 2000s to present the oldest Gen Zers are anywhere from 17 to 21 years old. 10 Oct 2017 Read more

Beware - location-based advertising is already in KenyaThe digital advertising industry in Kenya has often been accused of being fixated on the future, discussing hypothetical solutions that aren't yet available locally. The most elusive of these marketing solutions is location-based mobile marketing. Location-based advertising hinges around the fact that wherever we go these days we always carry a mobile with us. And most of us quite happily share our location data with the various apps we use. The sales impact connected with a clever location-based mobile ad is every marketer's dirty fantasy. 3 Oct 2017 Read more

Where are South Africans celebrating Heritage Day?Cape Town came out in spirit to celebrate Heritage Day, with more social posts about Heritage Day than the Johannesburg and Durban regions. Considering that Johannesburg has a higher population density than Cape Town (12,272,238 Gauteng population vs 5,822,769 Western Cape, according to Census 2011 Data), this is particularly interesting and shows that Capetownian's are an active, social bunch. 29 Sep 2017 Read more

The role of digital marketing in a millennial's worldRaised in a digital, media-saturated world, millennials are digital natives who have grown adept at communication and the rapidly progressive nature of the digital landscape. Previously, the more advertisements you threw at the younger generation, the earlier you got them to purchase your brand. Now, reaching out to the younger generation requires a different line of thought. Yet, more than a few brands are in the dark when it comes to defining and creating positive online interactions that resonate with the millennial crowd, because traditional marketing methods simply no longer work. 31 Aug 2017 Read more

Digital is a revolution, not a media typeBeing in the advertising industry, digital is often referred to as a media type: "Let's complement our above-the-line media with digital.” I can't help but chuckle a little inside every time I hear this phrase. The whole concept of above-the-line, below-the-line and through-the-line is a little grey to me; consumers don't compartmentalise their decision-making journey and neither should we as marketers. That is an article on its own; Google's Micro-Moments is a good read but that aside, let us get into the point at hand. 22 Aug 2017 Read more

Mom in mediaIt was really a daunting thought of coming back to the world of media, after spending a year away from the industry upon having my first baby. After all, a year away from media is like dog years, multiplied by seven. So much can change in a relatively short space of time. I gave all of my time and attention to my little one and blocked out, for the most part, social media and any advertising or media-related conversation, other than having the radio constantly playing during the day in an effort to not over-stimulate my baby with what was on television. How was I going to assimilate back into the media world again? How was I going to catch up with all the changes? How would I cope with a full work day under a fair amount of sleep deprivation (my boy wasn't, and still isn't sleeping through the night)? After spending every single minute of every day with him for the past 365 days, how would this affect me emotionally? Was I going to be bursting into tears at my desk, or in meetings because I miss him so much? These are all very scary thoughts that kept me up at night, for about a month before returning to work. 15 Aug 2017 Read more

Graham DeneysI have been doing a lot of thinking since I first had the opportunity to immerse myself into the world of VR courtesy of Google Cardboard. I sat on a swivel chair in a dark office in London, spinning back and forth as aliens descended over a desert landscape. I was suddenly interrupted by a tap on the shoulder that jerked me back to reality "phone for you" I was almost upset that someone had pulled me out of this alternate dimension. How could somebody actually want me to attend to something in real-life when I was actually far away in a foreign land defending my space-craft? 17 Aug 2016 Read more
