Uber goes local, with their first 'above-the-line' campaignGrey Advertising is proud to announce Uber's first South African locally produced TVC and radio spot campaign, which went live from Monday, 13 November 2017. The concept centred on Freedom. The campaign brings to life the occasions when we just don't want to be troubled by the hassle of driving ourselves to an outing which requires us to be free. The ads capture the comedically irrational relationships between South Africans and their cars. 30 Nov 2017 Read more >>

Client service is deadWhat has been the biggest change in the advertising industry over the last two decades, besides the rise of digital channels? Surely one of the biggest changes has been client service. Back in the day, client service were paper-pushers. Glorified admin girls. Perhaps half-decent project managers, if you were lucky. That role is well and truly dead. Thank goodness. But it doesn't bode well for you or your agency if you think that this archaic role will satisfy your clients' needs in 2017. 17 Oct 2017 Read more >>

Fearless, or just pigheaded?Did you know that DHA, an important omega-3 fatty acid, is found concentrated in mammalian brains? I ate one. Yes, I did. Pig brain! Easter holiday: keeping your eye on the important thingsMost South Africans are looking forward to a well deserved break this Easter holidays. It allows for quality time with the people who matter most, family. Whether traveling or staying home, families are generally more relaxed during this time and might not be as aware of their surroundings as they would be during their day to day routines. A car door might not be locked or a safety belt could be left unsecured. This is however, the time where we should be more committed to safety due to heightened criminal activities and an influx of traffic on our national roads. 13 Apr 2017 Read more >>

Pharma advertising - Copy and paste or compelling communication?I recently came across a website called badadgenerator.com. The site offers visitors the opportunity to "Design your very own healthcare campaign" - free of charge. It's supposed to be funny, and it would be, except for the fact that just about every piece of health-related communication I've seen in the past few years looks like it was designed using this site. You know what I mean, happy patients running on the beach or staring wistfully at a sunset; the overused jigsaw puzzle pieces; juvenile drawings - anything from a stereotypical family to a pair of lungs, designed to tell doctors the product is for children; and my personal favourite - blue or green (and in the case of the eminently creative, blue and green) swooshes top and bottom of the page. 4 Aug 2016 Read more >>

Changing course - Brand activations redefinedWe have all found ourselves sidestepping one of those cute promoters in a tight-fitting dress straddling the product isle at our local grocery store. "Let me tell you about the new..." she starts, but in anticipation you evasively side-step and start walking faster, purposely avoiding eye contact. Not to be dissuaded she continues with her syrupy pitch, "This product will change your life ..." making it seem like this wondrous product will surely change life as you know it, at least forever. You, know you have at least 101 things to do today and do not have time for this frivolity, but you nonetheless politely stop and listen as you feel sorry for the poor promoter, "she is only trying to earn a living after all!". 18 May 2016 Read more >>

Advertising things... that make life betterI know you all think it'll be cool to win the Lotto, retire at 30 and spend all day playing Candy Crush on the couch. I'm not speaking from experience, but I reckon it would suck. Fun in the beginning, but eventually you'll have no compelling reason to get out of your PJ's or brush your hair in the morning. That's the life of someone who has no purpose. They just exist, they don't actually have a positive impact on themselves or their community. It's exactly the same for brands. If a company doesn't have a purpose or something to stand for, it just exists. Adds no meaning and no value to its customers. 6 Apr 2016 Read more >>

Kim GentleIn South Africa, first world and third world often blend into each other without anyone noticing, especially in the form of technology. One catches a first-world Gautrain or communicates with the rest of the globe via the very latest smartphone or iPad, yet we have potholes on our roads that could engulf a small car and power cuts that occur almost on a weekly basis. So technology is certainly our flag-bearer, but how has this benefited the consumer? 24 Mar 2015 Read more >>

The "content" revolutionIn the digital age we find ourselves in a position where content has become king. But as little as five years ago advertisers were still competing for the top position through the use of gimmicks, thinking that entertainment is the key to inform online customers of their products. As the head of a digital department I frequently heard the words: "Yes, it brings across the message. But it's so boring." followed by the all-too-familiar "Can you make it pop, or bounce or do something?". Those were the days of flash websites with loading times designed to allow the user an opportunity to finish that quilt she's been putting off for so long - all in the name of entertainment. There were no quick solutions and developing an engaging website was a year-long, super-expensive process. The worst was that the final product would have a shelve life of a few months - its imminent death fuelled by the daily complaints of customers who visibly aged before the contact details could load. Those were the days. Good riddance. 17 Jul 2014 Read more >>
In-store communication speaks louder than wordsIt's estimated that 70% of purchasing decisions by consumers are made when coming face-to-face with in-store point-of-sale. In my opinion this is probably an optimistic figure many hope to achieve when it comes to evaluating the efficacy of their standard point-of-sale material. You might be ticking a box by having a bulky pull up banner on display next to their product, but does it make the product or the campaign memorable? 15 Jul 2014 Read more >>

@PR, it's time we got a divorce. I'm leaving you for @PC #TwitterDivorcedPR is great fun these days, isn't it? In fact, recent experience has led me to start a one-woman crusade to rename the ancient art of PR into a far more appropriate acronym, PC. Public Conversations. After all, at the end of the day and given the world we operate in today, relations simply don't cut it. Conversations do. No amount of pitching a concept is going to get you exposure, if it isn't presented in a way that gets people talking. No matter how utterly relevant nor how obviously beneficial the message you hold, if you can't provide the content in a format that's relevant and exciting to a myriad of different platforms, then you're going to find yourself up the proverbial creek. 13 Jun 2014 Read more >>
