South Africa will now use one logo to market the country, following Cabinet's approval of a new international marketing logo. The new logo is designed to replace about 70 old logos that were used by the International Marketing Council and South African Tourism to represent SA. What do you think of the design?

Logo updated Monday, 9 November 2009 at 11:50am; original logo was supplied by BuaNews.

Is this not a high school project?-
Surely this isn't for real. Please tell me . . .
Did a professional design agency really do this? I don't think so. Posted on 6 Nov 2009 12:03
After 18 months is this really the best you could do?-
Take the SA flag, a nasty font and slap them togther.

Well one thing it will definitely communicate to the international market is that were a nation of sh*t designers. So much for the design economy!!! Posted on 6 Nov 2009 12:27
The arrow thing...-
...could have been quite clever, except they chopped the point of it off and that font is quite nice for a greeting card for granny! Posted on 6 Nov 2009 13:21
Why not have a competition?-
I think the best thing they could do to stop the agony, would be to open it up to a competition - the competition entries themselves could be run as a a travelling exhibition - the whole lot of them a showcase - not just one, and especially not this one! Posted on 6 Nov 2009 13:26

Design competitions-
No thanks. Posted on 6 Nov 2009 22:35
Is this not a high school project?-
I also thought it looked like high school project. There's somethig about it that reminds me of school and those after christmas/january TV adverts for stationery. Posted on 6 Nov 2009 14:30
How can they annihilate our beautiful flag?-
Our flag is about freedom. This has a distinctly military/police feel to it.
Leave our national icon alone and stop trying to make it into a logo. Posted on 6 Nov 2009 13:26
Ouch...
never in my life...-
... have I seen something quite so pathetic and amateurish. 18 months for WHAT.... and at what price, I wonder?? Posted on 6 Nov 2009 13:28
SA logo-
The logo has no authority especially for such a beautiful country Posted on 6 Nov 2009 13:30
eish..-
I can appreciate that Cabinet ministers are not marketing people, but the IMC? How do they even submit this for Cabinet approval.Cabinet should haverejected it and rather insisted that we do a competition - as we all know, the competition itself would have created awareness about the overall brand south africa message.

Disappointed, Johannesburg
Who was the designer??? A school child?-
Was a design company hired to do this logo?
It looks like a grade 5 school project?
Very unprofessional.
It is truly awful!
Sorry, there are lots of professional designers out there that would most certainly be able to depict South Africa under a better light.
What this logo says to people on a national and internationally is that South Africa lacks professionally qualified people in the country.
Honestly, what does this logo say to you?

Very disappointed..... Posted on 6 Nov 2009 14:31

18 months for this...you're fired!-
I can't find words for this? O yes a few horrid ones but then Mr Maseko says : colourful (agree), dynamic...ehh where oja arrow? and positioning...what is that about, they'll have to invest millions to make a logo like that work...we are an award winning nation when it comes to creativity are we not... Posted on 6 Nov 2009 15:23
Not a fool
You have got to be kidding!-
FOUR YEARS!!!? Posted on 6 Nov 2009 16:10
Wrong logo-
It's the wrong logo showing here, guys.

You can see the correct logo on: http://www.bizcommunity.com/Article/196/11/41764.html Posted on 6 Nov 2009 17:47
Jo s'logo
It really lacks direction ...-
Sadly, by simply plakking a multicoloured flag with a forward "directional" arrow and a multimillion buck campaign won't bring success. And why right-facing; it seems PC motivated. (Or is it meant to be). A "lift-off" slant would have given this hapless thingy lots more vooma. Anyway, is it not high time that we stop meddling with our flag and start to appoint seriously credible designers; maybe someone with flair and some strategic input. Posted on 6 Nov 2009 21:09

its early stages-
well the concept of a single minded marketing campaign overseas is good, but for 18 months of work that is not up to international standards. but let us give it time and see what good it does Posted on 8 Nov 2009 11:52

south african logo-
the logo is an insult to RSA logo designers, what's that a logo or our flag. i am embarrased. but this is RSA you cant really complaine. look at the NYDA logo. huh Posted on 9 Nov 2009 09:57

Save us-
If this is what we should expect from those who create national symbols then the Springboks logo should be left alone, please. 18 months makes it more painful. Posted on 9 Nov 2009 11:15
shoot the designer-
was this logo done by a politician with powerpoint? if not then the government and all taxpayers were seriously ripped off. Posted on 9 Nov 2009 15:29
Wonderful-
What I do get is the pathetic nature of our marketing efforts is now complimented by an equally boring logo. Wake up. International marketing no longer takes place using smoke signals Posted on 9 Nov 2009 15:54

I like it-
It probably won't win a design award but I like it's clean simple looks and it's quite unpretentious. And come onnnnnn it's it's not our new national flag or emblem we are designing it's a friggin sticker! Posted on 5 Feb 2010 12:33
