Can a cartoonist go too far?

Just in case you may have missed it, Zapiro late last week followed up on his controversial cartoon featuring the rape of Justice with another one in the sequence, causing even more of an uproar and outcry. When does satire overstep the mark? Has Zapiro gone too far or is it all just a metaphor in a tea cup?

I think Zapiro is cleverly doing this to get sympathy awards. Now he's sounding like a victim and I am feeling sorry for him. RAPE is serious in South Africa, anyone who has at least read S.A newspapers for a week will know that. Zapiro must think before publishing trash like that. Posted on 15 Sep 2008 14:22

So is blackmail and abuse of the judicial system - also RAPE-
I think too many people are afraid to admit what is really going on here. Judges, fellow countrymen and government get blackmailed - revolutionary crisis. THATS THE PROBLEM!!
This cartoon is not about "physical" rape.

Zapiro is clearly crossing the line here!!! There is a fine line between satire and hatred for someone. Do you honestly think Zapiro will continue being satirical after being charged for defamation? That explains the 'shower' attached to head of zuma in all his drawings, he evidently holds a grudge against him. Good for him. crossing the line is the only way to get points across in this nation.Because the moment you contest someone or something here ,your mouth is stifled and told to shut up. Experience in both I`m afraid.

The fact that he`s upset you, is point enough. It proves that not everyone approves of his humour or vulgarity,to some and that is the point of cartoonists, to stimulate debate and create discussion.If everyone disagreed with the cartoon that would make us all fencesitters and condone the actions of all the atrocities happening here.Thought it was a heavy cartoon but thought it was justified.. Protect our democracy-
I am proud to say I live in a democratic South Africa. Freedom of speech is an important part of our new democracy and we, as tax paying citizens need to keep our employees (the government) in check at all times. Our media need to consistently keep us informed as we question each and every thing our democratically elected leaders do.

The truth hurts ... and the ANC jumping up and down and complaining like children proves that. Well done to our media for questioning our leaders. Long may it last .... imagine living a little north of SA in a place like Zimbabwe! Posted on 15 Sep 2008 19:40

It is a posibility-
Individuals like Judges, Sportsmen, Journalists, Analysts, Social commentators, groups, for example governments and organisations both political or otherwise can go too far. Going too far can be voluntary or involuntary, in anycase it's still going too far. It simply means that one has gone beyond the expected or out of their scope, it could be for the right or wrong reason. A cartoonist does not work in a vacuum, s/he works under the guidance of an editor who is there to make a judgement on the work produced. We need more Zapiros!!-
Zapiro was on tv the other day. he defended his position resolutely and i support him, on the other hand i'm not, as a woman, offended by such depictions. I actually think its a very clever choice that communicates in a rather 'closer to home' sense.
Zuma has committed less than dignified acts for a man of his position even for me more questionable was his admission to actually havin slept wih that woman and "taking a shower after" hence the shower on his head is another clever element and i'm still laughin. to this day i cannot understand why his fellow countrymen continue to support a man who cannot even be examplery to the entire nation as a president in waitin, a father, a husband etc Posted on 16 Sep 2008 16:23

It is a possibility-
The question is not about Zapiro. Zapiro is just one cartoonist amongst the millions out there, it is of paramount importance that when we are called upon to comment on issues that are important for our democracy to prosper that we don't personalise these issues, hence i still maintain my position that any human being is capable of going too far irrespective of their positions in society. It is a question of objectivity and subjectivity, bias and unbias, it all depends on your stance or position on that particular topic. Those who occupy high positions in institutions that are meant to uphold democracy and the rule of law ought to take decisions that will make some spit siliva on them, irrespective of who they are Posted on 17 Sep 2008 09:07

How would you feel if it was your father?-
For this whole new South Africa thing to work, we need to understand that we as South Africans are brought up under different circumstances. We need to understand that different cultures have different values and beliefs.

I think that for a cartoonist Zapiro is either ignorant or is desperately looking for attention. At the same time I blame Zuma and Co. for Zapiro’s stupidity, if they refer to the president of the country the way they do, how then do they expect not to be treated the same way.

In our culture if the head of the family is compromised, so is the whole family.

I would be upset, if it were my father, but so would i if my father were embroiled in as many court cases.

As I`m sure my other twenty or so siblings from other mothers would be...

Plus this whole different cultures thing is a load of bollocks! I`ll choose to wear Prada by day and then adorn myself with tribal fittings whenever i feel the need and sleep with whomever and however many i see fit.

Zapiro has disappointed me.-
Personally, I have always appreciated Zapiro's work, so when I saw this article I thought that people must have it wrong - I thought there was no way Zapiro would overstep the line.
But when I clicked the link to the cartoon, I felt sick to my stomach with what I saw. Rape is ugly and disgusting, and while I see the point he is trying to make, it is unthoughtful and insensitive to portray it in a cartoon. There are many other ways of depicting what is happening in government then to illustrate a rape scene.

But when it happens to someone close to you and the perps get away with it,
that`s when you as a citizen of this country is being raped by the judicial system.

The cartoon summed it up for me perfectly, and felt a sense of relief in some weird way, that someone is willing to speak their mind.

Unfortunate for Zuma to be depicted like that but then again should`ve considered his actions before the long list of offences stacked against him.

Does anyone remember a little man called Hitler in a country called Germany in the 1930's. Started in quiet obscurity and later rose to control Europe by force and violence? People should wake up man, all those quiet voices are helped along by cartoonists who have the balls to actually say what they feel.

So much denial and too much leniancy towards the actual offenders.
