Concerning the latest announcement regarding the possible change of host city/location for the 2009 Loeries, we are asking you, the industry, what your preferences are. After reviewing a long list of possible towns, The Loerie Awards has invited these four host cities/locations to submit proposals to host the 2009 Awards ceremony. The tender deadline is the last week of September 2008, after which the Loeries Committee will review the pitches. A final decision will be made in October this year.

When making your decision, keep in mind the following factors:

  • accessibility in terms of time travelled and cost
  • accommodation (the 2008 Loeries had over 4000 delegates)
  • clashes with other major events (impact on transport, accommodation and venues)
  • overlap with other major industry events (eg Design Indaba)
  • decent weather for that time of year
  • large enough venue for the awards ceremony
  • venues for after-parties
  • “business tourism” activities for during the day
  • infrastructure (eg transport, catering, media)
  • the pros and cons of a big city versus small town environment
  • safety requirements
  • etc

Plett / St Francis-
Keep it in a small town environment, just not as pleeuurggh as Margate.

Think Plett , Beacon Isle, Cornuttis, Polo, or St Francis, Posted on 5 Sep 2008 18:12
Now you're talking-
St Francis would be great! Posted on 8 Sep 2008 12:42
STELLENBOSCH-
Stellenbosch would give you both? Sun city to expensive for young creatives, Jhb not a getaway for most people in the industry. Posted on 8 Sep 2008 12:43
GAUTENG-
Surely keeping it Gauteng based would make more sense. Doesn't make sense having the entire industry having to get flights to lord knows where. Driving better and means easy access for more young creatives. Posted on 8 Sep 2008 12:51
Logistics-
Plett or Knysna perfect and easily accessible from PE or George airports. Impossible to accommodate 4000 people in St Francis and very little entertainment. Posted on 8 Sep 2008 13:18

Cape not cool for Cape Town industry-
The Loeries needs to be a get away for the whole industry. Having it CT in is going to be like just another function for the Capetonians.

Anywhere neutral will do. Viva good old Sun City. Posted on 8 Sep 2008 13:40

Margate and Sun City suck, but CT blows-
I'm amazed that anyone from up-country would want to spend double on transport and triple on accommodation in CT, given the slim chance of finding both the July weather and the CT natives hospitable. Posted on 8 Sep 2008 15:53

Who gives a toss? Just give Loeries an African name.-
Mmmm I bet they don't have this problem with staging the Cannes awards. Posted on 8 Sep 2008 16:57

SUN CITY-
It isn't the coolest place in the world, but it was respectable and made the award show feel prestigious. It's not about the place where people just want to get pissed and vomit and have a free holiday. It's about good creative work getting praised. That's what Sun City was all about. But, yes the place did suck, but it made margate feel like a sleazy matric holiday. Posted on 8 Sep 2008 19:01
sun city-
let's be honest, in it's day loeries at sun city was awesome. there is nothing wrong with the venue, in fact it was the best venue ever. the fact is in the past the loeries were not well run at sun city, it lost all it's glamour. seeing how this is a new loeries run by different people, if they could make it more glitzy like it was in the 1990's, sun city would be the ideal venue. plenty of hotel space, plenty of entertainment and when you want to go back to your hotel no need for transport. it's a no brainer. loeries pls make the logical decision. margate is a racist back town that no one really wants to visit. sun city is a great venue and if you made it into a cannes people would love it again. the loeroes which had the bean bags at sun city was awesome and if you bring that back you'd have a lot more than 4000 people joining it. Cape Town is the best Posted on 10 Sep 2008 07:42
@Marion Harper, seriously?-
Give the Loeries an African name?

I couldn't tell from your post if you were serious, but if you were, do me a favour, with all of the bollocks that we are facing in the industry at the moment the main thing that's on your mind is changing the name of the Loeries? I'm all for equality in our industry but please, get real. And besides, isn't the Loerie a South African bird? Posted on 11 Sep 2008 14:38
CHANGE THE NAME OF THE LOERIES!!!-
Hahahaha!

seeing as our next president is likely to be Zuma and nothing's been named after him yet, we can call them the.................drum rol.............................

"JACOB ZUMA AWARDS" or better yet:
-"JZ Awards"
-"Um-shini wam Awards" (especially if the venue will still be Margate)
-"Jusitice System Raped Awards"

hahahaha
