Last week, Jane Duncan, executive director of the Freedom of Expression Institute (FXI), suggested that the more one earns, the more one must pay for a TV licence, according to IOL. What do you think?

paying more for TV licences-
The higher you earn the more hours you spend at work / work related - why should you then pay more for TV licence, whereas chances of you watching tv are slim... Lets just stick to the std rate - tax is already killing us. Posted on 4 Feb 2008 12:21

Pay more for s*@t we been fed-
Im not my paying my TV licence now and I wont until the content is worth my money...no matter how rich or poor you and isn't much to write home about that is on TV Posted on 7 Feb 2008 13:40

eat the rich-
this attitude in South Africa is becoming more and more frustrating. Who is going to be motivated to work hard and make money in SA, with these kinds of policies? Posted on 4 Feb 2008 15:39
It's all the same propaganda isn't it...-
Rich or poor... we all see the same censored propaganda and reruns... Posted on 4 Feb 2008 17:08

Ludicrous!-
Everyone sees the same content; why should some get it for less than others. Granted, there are very poor people in this country who cannot afford a TV licence but what about those who prefer to loaf - how are you going to regulate this. Ms D, methinks you have been smoking your socks! Posted on 5 Feb 2008 11:10

Not a good idea-
I earn a pretty decent salary myself, and although I have a tv at home it is not connected to any form of outside signal at all. Even without the services of SABC or DSTV I still pay my tv licence and now someone suggests I pay more?

I also agree with the consensus that the more you earn the less you watch in my experience. Posted on 5 Feb 2008 11:20

Should higher-earners pay more for TV licences?-
It is quite simple - why should anybody - rich, poor or otherwise, have to pay more for an inferior service. In fact there are some days when one wonders why you have to pay anything at all. Posted on 5 Feb 2008 11:33
paying for T.V. licences-
No one should pay for T.V. Licences!!!
SABC T.V. is Commercial so let Advertisers pay!
That is the way it is in North America and it works quite well.
OR get a more affordable Cable System Network. Posted on 5 Feb 2008 12:59

YEP!-
I HONESTLY BELIEVE THAT THEY SHOULD PAY MORE COZ THEY GETTING MORE! Posted on 5 Feb 2008 13:21

Nope!-
By the same token, then, one should pay only what one can afford, on everything, but be able to acquire everything. So we'd have the poor driving Mercs that cost them R200, and the rich driving the same models, that cost them R1million. Jawelnofine. It won't work - and it's not fair. Posted on 6 Feb 2008 11:03
Eish singing is betta!!
We all watch the same rubbish-
If there were special privilages for paying more like better viewing and decent news, for sure I would pay more but we all have to watch the same rubbish, so we all pay the same. Posted on 5 Feb 2008 16:33

Not a chance-
No way , higher earners are watching dstv anyway , SABC should be like any other company and support iteself . Posted on 5 Feb 2008 19:49

Paying more for TV licences-
Absolutely not. Every high-earner in this country is already paying more for several services. Higher taxes (the progressive tax system), higher municipal tarriffs etc. Paying more for tv licences and getting the sames service as everyone else disadvantages us as consumers. We should actually be paying less on account of electricity outages! The fair thing to do is to aportion the licence fee, based on the frequency of actual TV broadcasting in one's home. If electricity usage is to be monitored, so should frequency of TV viewing. So no power, no TV = lower charge! Posted on 6 Feb 2008 10:26
We all watch the same amount...-
If you're only tapped into the SABC and e-tv networks, it means the same amount of tv viewing is available to all... So why should anyone pay more for the same service? And what, are they going to ask for my salary slip to find out how much I earn and calculate it accordingly?? They're out of their minds. It may be more 'sensible' if they want to monitor everyone's viewing (number of hours spent with the box on) and charge us per programme watched, and then it'll be considered pay-per-view... But if that's the case, I'm getting DsTv. Posted on 6 Feb 2008 10:32

I shouldn't pay a cent-
The main reason for TV licences is to subsidise the SABC, and since I don't watch any of it - ever - I should not have to pay a licence fee. Posted on 6 Feb 2008 11:06

pathertic-
i hardly watch it,so why pay for something that doesnt work for me,whoever came up with that must give up their day job and go to psychiatric institution or something to that effect.not in this lifetime i wont do it,and if they will consider making it compulsory or lawful then im changing to Dstv or no television at all.damn have they been smoking something strong or what Posted on 6 Feb 2008 12:48
Richie poor
Does the Cuca shop down the road pay T.V Licences-
I find it grossly unfair enforcing T.V licences in select areas like they do. I doubt very much inspectors check whether shanty towns have a T.V licence although you can see T.V aerails sticking up everywhere like porcupine quills. Before any laws are introduced for anything, it should be fair to the entire population. Otherwise like many other things the disgruntled few have to foot the bill. Please note: this is not a racist comment though many will take it in that way.......... Posted on 6 Feb 2008 13:50

Its ridiculous to pay for shoddy tv-
I find the argument ridiculous, firstly we are forced to pay for the tv license even though the national channels only cater for a few LSMs. I very rarely ever consider looking at the three pathetic choices we have and am sick to death with anyone that works for earning a living having to be punished. Do we live in a democratic of communist society.

Maybe if we actually had a reputable national television agency people would pay and we would not have to rely on a private satellite service.

Proudly south african Posted on 6 Feb 2008 14:08

Show me one rich person who watch TV-
Why penalise poor sorry I mean RICH people who do not even have time to watch tv. With the all the nice gagets at their disposal. show me a rich person who still watch boring TV. Keep your tv,I am busy surfin the net... Posted on 6 Feb 2008 14:13
Oh pahleeeze-
What next? Good grief, the service is crap, we pay tax on tax, those 4.5 million of us that support the rest of the country. Who's brilliant idea is this? Need I ask.
I will never pay any more than I already do to watch the rubbish spewed out by SABC. Posted on 6 Feb 2008 15:53
More for TV licences?-
Who wants to watch the junk on 'big brother' antiquated, marginalised SABC anyway. Posted on 7 Feb 2008 10:06
Ms Ma'am
That's a no-brainer-
Everyone knows that most people with too much money are way too preoccupied with spending it on overpriced frivolities to ever consider paying more for public broadcasting television. Posted on 7 Feb 2008 10:39

Jane, Jane, Jane......-
Just who is going to benefit from this? The person in a rural community that doesn't have access to electricity, water or sewerage and therefore doesn't have a TV...why don't you use your time to come up with contructive ideas like solving the crime/power/water/starvation issues in this country...I'm sure that the high earners would freely contribute to helping solve these problems and not being punished at every turn for achieving something in life! Why should anyone pay for something that they are not getting, that is entertainment? Posted on 7 Feb 2008 13:14

Another pathetic idea-
This is the most ridiculous idea I have ever heard. I own a tv and it only gets used to watch the occasional video. I cannot remember the last time I actually watched an SABC programme - I don't have satellite or M-Net. This woman should get in touch with reality instead of touting these insane ideas around there. Somebody tell her to come read the comments on this and take a look at the resounding NO on the poll! Posted on 7 Feb 2008 13:23

Preposterous! Is that not discrimination!?!-
Rich people or active people hardly have the time to watch TV...Stop being a couch potato and use that valuable time doing something that makes a different! Posted on 8 Feb 2008 08:29

No,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no-
I am currently paying TV licence and then subscribing to Multichice which i watch more often because of variety. Why on earth would i find any motivating reason 2 pay more for tv lic if the same content is available to both rich or poor?? Posted on 8 Feb 2008 10:14

CRAZY-
That is straight up crazy and the one of the worst ideas I have this year.Even those that are considered poor will agree that this idea is nonsense and there is nothing that they can even watch on SABC TV especially that stimulates their minds.BAD IDEA... who ever came up with this is not so clever at all. For bread, anyday....-
I'd pay more for services that are a necessity (water and electricity), but not TV. People don't have to watch TV to survive. Posted on 8 Feb 2008 13:25

Higher earners - more for TV Licence-
Never thought about it prior to this but - YES. Higher earners are more likely to have DSTV etc and therefore have access to more channels. Mmmmm good idea. when one thinks about. Why should the poorer people be paying the same for 4 lousy channels while on the other side others are have over a hundred ( or whatever DSTV has) for the same price. Posted on 8 Feb 2008 14:06

Being Fair-
Whether you rich or poor everyone gets exposed to the same shows on SABC so its only fair that everyone pays the same amount for the tv license(although i dont see why we should have to pay to begin with).

Whoever says that people with DSTV should pay more on their tv license clearly dont know what they are talking about. If you have DSTV you already pay alot for having the luxury of getting so many channels, so paying extra on your tv license would be ridiculous. Pay for DSTV & then still pay more for a tv license just because you have DSTV.........I THINK NOT!! Posted on 8 Feb 2008 15:46

No fair-
I can't believe that this was even suggested. As most people have said below - why should we pay more just cos we earn more? I work over 10 hours a day to earn what I earn - why should I pay more to watch TV? I think this must be one of the craziest suggestions I've ever heard. Posted on 10 Feb 2008 14:04

Utter nonsense-
If we have to pick bones then it should be how much TV the people watch. If they were saying that these people watch more television, I would understand but that is highly unlikely. What is possible is that they have more television sets, DVD players, and TV games in their homes. One set is connected to the visitors'lounge and that is never used.the other is connected to the DVD and that is used for those. the other is the kiddies lounge where they play their TV games all day and more often than not noone who can afford it ever gets to watch licenced TV. Which means they already do pay more anyway for a service they do not use as they have to licence each and every TV set in their homes. What is the bone of contention here? People can't enjoy their money in peace? Posted on 10 Feb 2008 16:26

Do you have high earners channels?-
People dont just choose to earn more, they work hard for thier salaries!!!

No way-
It really does not make sense to have high earners pay more for a tv license, the sabc does not even give proper shows, therefore their value for money is like 3 over 10. Maybe if they start airing interesting stuff and have quality:ie:ever taken note of the soccer matches and compare them to DSTV supersports? I rest my case! Posted on 19 Feb 2008 09:08

Pay more for what? Days of our lives, the bold and the beautiful, rocky1, rocky2, and gosh repeats and more repeats?? Rich people cant waste money on such. That must not even be consider it. There are only a handful of shows worth watching anyways, Why pay more when there is liitle to watch????????? C'mon. Lets be serious. Posted on 2 Jun 2008 14:02

What Hell no!?-
The SABC should get subsidies by the govt because the goverment wants to control eveything from the news and comments made on television. Why dont just they pay maybe all the shows that were not produced in south africa and are outdated should be canned once and for all. Posted on 2 Jun 2008 14:10
