Iden Wetherell named WPR's International Editor of the Year
Zimbabwe Independent editor Iden Wetherell has been named the 2002 World Press Review International Editor of the Year, in recognition of his courageous work on behalf of the independent press in Zimbabwe.

Wetherell is the 33rd recipient of the award since it was established in 1975. Each year the award is presented by the New York-based World Press Review to an editor outside the USA in recognition of enterprise, courage and leadership in advancing the freedom and responsibility of the press, enhancing human rights, and fostering excellence in journalism.

The award citation reads: "Your persistence in reporting and decrying the Mugabe regime's despotism, despite official reprisals, and the leadership role you have taken in the Zimbabwe National Editors Forum have rightly earned you the admiration of your journalistic colleagues in Zimbabwe and beyond."

The World Press Review is published by the Stanley Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation.
