Culture via language
It doesn't matter which province focuses on what language, as long as everyone is able to understands an African language. In KZN it would obviously be Zulu, due to the dominance of the language in the region. As for Afrikaans, Afrikaner kids are already studying in their mother tongue at school, and doing English as a second language, and that is working for them.

Whether English is a first language and another African language is taught as a second language is irrelevant, as long as young Tommy Smith is able to understand what I'm saying if we both reside in the same region. Posted on 17 Jun 2013 11:39

Culture via language
I agree with you fully on this topic. What I say is english can be 1st language at schools and then 3 other languages that learners can choose from. We also need more language teachers(other than english). Posted on 17 Jun 2013 08:58

Well Sanele, by your own reasoning then, which province should be the 'Afrikaans' province? The Free State? The Western Cape? The Northern Cape? There are strong arguments in favour of each. The same goes for Xhosa and Zulu ... you may have dominant concentrations in certain provinces, but there are groups native to every province.

Ultimately it's a question of logistics, and if we have to be brutal about it, it's better to have kids in under-resourced schools learning English (as the international language of business) as their only English language, and have the teacher which would have been allocated to the second language (which nobody will agree about) to an equally undisputed subject like Maths or Science. Amazing to see the change in the trends over the past year and how the market has responded. I have watched the fluctuation of my Barbeque downs property very closely. Posted on 14 Jun 2013 12:19

2013 and still chasing "Likes"
Hi Zaakirah, I completely agree with your points. Everything should be lead by an overarching strategy with key targets and KPI's.

I still however think that setting "Likes" as a KPI for the sake of just gaining "Likes" is pointless. There needs to be a strategic reason as to why a brand would like to grow the "Likes" and then know what they intend on doing with the community that they have created.

I also couldn't agree more with you about content, it all boils down to content and bespoke content is key :) Relevance and context should also be a priority like you pointed out. Posted on 13 Jun 2013 20:09

Trying too hard?
You are welcome. And I agree, balance is an important thing when you establishing yourself and are aiming for sustainability. But to be the best, you need to have an extreme...balance can be accomplished by anyone. Posted on 13 Jun 2013 18:12

While I agree with you, I also learn toward disagreement because businesses measure success differently.

When you think as a social media manager, the KPIs must inform the strategy for your efforts not your audience.

In terms of a mobile apps company for example:
the KPIs are growth in:

1) Download numbers (apps)

2) Revenue numbers

3) App store rankings

4) Monthly page views

5) Re-engagement

And those are driven by marketing efforts through amazing content on FB – because great content gets likers to re-engage. So if you were after the re-engagement KPI, then you can show success in your social media efforts because of your great content and your large following. But if the goal was to increase revenue, then social media is so far not as effective.

So imagine if you had 200 followers and the only three people who engage are employees? Is that not completely pointless.

So you actually do need numbers but you also need to post the right stuff at the right time, isn’t it. Posted on 13 Jun 2013 16:51

You have hit the nail on the head on this one. A radio station presenter lineup is indeed similar to a soccer team lineup. Posted on 13 Jun 2013 16:05
Cape Town Designer
MetropolitanRepublic wins World Design Capital pitch
One or two people living in Cape Town doth not an agency make... MR are still a Joburg beast at heart – which is kinda weird, if you think that this pitch is all about bettering the lives of the people in a locality – by its homegrown designers. Sour grapes? Not really, but MR are well-awarded and have proven themselves to be a strong agency so will more than likely do a good job. But i.t.o of giving local designers a chance to work with local problems, it's a bit embarrassing in the world's eyes that the WDC board made the poor choice to not uplift its local design agencies.
