The Olympics... Being held where?
The only tips the british would consider are on the horse races, the only tips they give are usually small change in restaurants and the only tip I have that the Olympic Games is happening somewhere is via the SABC ad-breaks. Posted on 11 Jul 2012 19:52

Car uses cars to advertise
What a waste. The media selection is good but there is no idea here. I feel it would have been better if they had taken the Car Magazine articles from the edition that reviewed the exact wrapped car and wrapped the cars in the actual review article. Get people to read about the cars on the cars. You could have still had the large logo on the side. Posted on 11 Jul 2012 17:57

The Olympics... Being held where?
Maybe the olympics is the last thing on their minds, with the Euro-financial crisis and the Banks/Barclays scandal looming - i think their financial woes are probably more of a concern than anything else right-now, and rightfully so! Posted on 11 Jul 2012 16:41

The Olympics... Being held where?
Hi Marion,
One might say that everyone who has decided to attend the Olympics has already decided and /or got their tickets by now.
The purpose of much of this street display stuff falls into what used to be called post-purchase reinforcement.
However, it is surprising that sponsorship presence (if I understand you correctly) was not in great evidence. Posted on 11 Jul 2012 16:21

Making email stand out in cluttered communication
great advice. now maybe you can tell us how to avoid the spam filter which will inevitably consign this e-mailer to the junk folder. Posted on 11 Jul 2012 10:47

The great internet radio swindle
Well said. I take a very simplistic view. How many people that I know - and I know a lot - listens to internet radio? Especially the local ones. Using the rather thumb-sucky 6 degrees of seperation logic, something tells me that somewhere along the line, someone I know should at least know someone who listens to online radio. As of yet, I haven't found a single South African bring this up in my conversation. Except for one of two listening to overseas online radios like Last.fm or Jango. Posted on 11 Jul 2012 10:21

Video is the rising star of online marketing
Also, on that point. There are so many different ways of using video now. I have shot from "Cooking Show" type videos for appliance manufacturers, to manufacturing for furniture people, to interviews. I keep telling my clients they'd be left behind if they don't get in now.

#bankwars: 'Steve' vs Standard Bank, the sequel
I posted a few words in comments on Part 1. With this I just reiterate my feelings about FNB and me switching to STD. Thanks for the help Tiffany. A note, Jane* probably saw you mentioning that your'e married in Part 1 and thus used Mrs. Still, for women Ms is seen as default use in professional encounters. Posted on 10 Jul 2012 17:57

But is it lies? 'Steve' vs Standard Bank
Tiffany, I need to thank you for this piece. I have been pondering the daunting task of switching banks, which entails changing bank details at work and all the debit orders. Your piece made me realize that I need to switch, and switch to STD who was my obvious choice anyway.
Secondly I have to disagree with you in comparing between being a copywriter, and supplying lies to the public about a lucrative business and its undertakings. You paint over a grey picture with lush colours, but you don’t mislead millions with claims about yourself and how you apparently conduct business between you and your clients.

I’m a “Platinum Cheque, Credit, and Petro Card holder”, and have a home loan with FNB. I am also part of an “elite group” that has a “Private Banker” at my beck and call. None of this helped me in trying to stop a debit order from debiting my account for the past 2 years. Quickly did some maths and it already cost me more than R6500. Not only couldn’t the “Private Banker” or myself stop this order, he also promised me that FNB would refund the money. This happened twice, once in his office and once over the phone. When I sent an email to “Customer Service” and CC’d him, he denied in saying this and that no one at FNB would tell me that. This he again told me over the phone. Since then I only communicate with FNB via email since I cannot trust them and want to retain proof of whatever they claim.
Another incident was that I fell victim to a fraud scam of R16900 two weeks ago, which “they will resolve and maybe refund me in 8 weeks”. As soon as their “investigation” is over and I am refunded I will start the switching process to Standard Bank.

There’s plenty more unhappiness from my side about FNB, but I wont bother you with that. Just to make it clear, most of the words in quotation marks are things I believe is bull, incompetent or worthless. Posted on 10 Jul 2012 17:36

Coke goes flat!
I want to change the name of our town to Cokeville - because Coca Colai s painting the whole of our town RED. The buildings are red, their signs are up everywhere. One business will have up to 8 Coke signs all over it. In front, on the sides, on the stoeps - our platteland towns are all starting to look like a dump - like Elsiesriver. Coca Cola seems hell bent on associating ther company brand with dirt and filth because of all the litter and dirt in front of these crummy shops. Can the so-called Coca Cola company or Peninsula Beverages or whatever they are called please come out to my town to see what their god-awful signs look like? They have no artistic merit and no aesthetic value. Their signs are even to be found in the undulating green fields of the Sandvelt - totally removed from any settlement.
Coca Cola - you are messing up my country.......!!!! Posted on 10 Jul 2012 16:01

Ostrich cull grows as flu virus spread
I have a possible solution to this continuous epidemic, we use ECA (electro chemical activation) Technology to dose drinking water and spray animals, our product is water that has gone through electrolysis which destroys all virus etc yet is 100% environmentally friendly. We have had great results in Chicken,Dairy and Pig farming to date, www.ecogreensa.com Posted on 10 Jul 2012 15:35

Marketing industry is its own worst enemy
Chris, putting aside references to simpler times in the idyllic Garden of Eden and the navel-gazing discussion of marketing semantics, what exactly are you saying? You seem to slip in a point about the ‘industry’s’ apathy about a potential ban on alcohol advertising as somehow connected to it’s efficacy in selling more products and services. That’s right out of left field and certainly not part of the key messages I think you were trying to convey.

If being taken seriously is what you want, please don’t try to describe the evolution of the PR profession as akin to a “hooker changing her name from Gladys Smith to Exotica Erotica.” Them’s fighting words and you don’t want to get caught with your pants down without a good PR person fielding questions from the media for you.

My other favourite pearl from your diatribe: “Marketing has not changed in decades.” Perhaps it’s the principles of marketing you’re talking about. I reckon that the business of marketing today is as different as an old man is from the boyhood version of himself. (Read into this as you will.)

Yes, it is sad that the ad people (or is it marketers?) appear to “too self absorbed to do anything about the image of advertising”. Maybe they need to hire someone to do their PR or public affairs. (Incidentally, as an industry, the International Association of Business Communicators undertook the “Be Heard” campaign a number of years ago to raise its profile internationally (see: www.iabc.com).

Let’s understand one thing. For want of a better word, let’s call what you speak of as ‘relationship advermarketing’ and consider it as part of the ecosystem of communication that each of the disciplines you referenced are engaged in.

Remembering who took the first bit of the fruit…shouldn’t you first be acknowledging Eve and her persuasive public relations powers in convincing Adam to do the same?... Posted on 10 Jul 2012 14:46

Marketing industry is its own worst enemy
Wow, Chris, some of your comments about "marketers" are a little caustic and as a retired marketing consultant I have to butt in to say that you should separate marketing (as a management discipline) from marketing communication. Here, you will find many "pretenders" who equate any of the arms of marketing communication with marketing. Having worked both sides of the so-called fence, I experienced this ad nauseum in the ad industry.
True, they do find new ways in which to promote their agendas, but that is what they are paid to do and are not exposed to all the "P''s" of marketing.
Thanks again for a thought-provoking piece of Moerdyk's grey matter:-) Posted on 10 Jul 2012 14:37
