Where are women voices in talk radio?
I am a women and currently present and produce a show which deals with women issue...it is for women by a women. What I do to add diversity of voices and opinions to the show - I invite male experts to comment on issues women are dealing with and it helps to generate male responses as well as female responses. Your article speaks directly to my heart and my daily job - my show is called 'WIRED TO THE MOTHERLAND' - we tackle community related topics, relationships, health issues, women in business....etc and it is affiliated to 38 stations across the African Continent. www.wiredshow.org - I don't think SA stations are open to such shows like 'Wired To The Motherland' I have knocked on doors and proposed such only for the doors to be shut back at me....perhaps my VOICE is not meant for the South African listener rather for the African listener... Lots of LOLs in FBPK
Totally agree. I went with friends last night - really small audience - but we were given the full treatment and you're right - he draws you into his personal space and more than anything at the end - you feel as though you are friends and want it to stay that way. I also admire and respect his treatment of objectional people and situations! Posted on 20 Nov 2012 15:53

Linking ad rates to core circulation
A huge step by Times Media. Based, surely, on the US rate base model which applies to US magazines and newspapers.
An advertising model which makes the Publisher more accountable for circulation losses and reduction in relevance. As traditional media struggles to prove any sort of advertising performance this is a first step towards admitting to huge advertiser wastage. Posted on 20 Nov 2012 15:21

Estate agents need to embrace online technology
Great article Bertie! In fact, research that Privateproperty.co.za recently undertook with Columinate backs up your facts absolutely. In its survey of practicing estate agents, Privateproperty.co.za found that, overall, online resources are used the most for advertising property and are considered to be the most effective. Further, agents foresee that the popularity of portals will rise in the near future, with increased demand from consumers and uptake by agents. Posted on 20 Nov 2012 11:02

Africa leads in mobile innovation
You have omitted the reason for this. The poor African infrastructure and the fact that mobile fills the vacuum. Banks just aren't getting to the rural folk, anyway the banks aren't able to make money out of the bottom of the pyramid as their model currently stands.

Poor education and poor medical facilities have necessitated the only alternative: The mobile companies step up to fill the gap. You can SMS your symptoms to an on line doctor and get diagnosed and suggested medical treatment via your phone. You can use M-PESA to pay bills, do transactions and get on with your life.

Mobile companies are doing way more than just providing voice. They do it because the useless governments are incapable! African politicians need to start being made accountable for stealing their constituents money and start doing something for the people that put them into power.

Instead they sit back and expect the world to keep solving their problems. This laughable African solutions to Africa problems will just result in a larger begging bowl.

So meanwhile, the mobile companies carry on solving a lot of problems that governments could, if there was the political will! Posted on 20 Nov 2012 08:18

Insecure, threatened managers treat subordinates unjustly
Awesome article, I can so relate to what your friend in finance is going through. I've been there done that and sadly enough I too am looking elsewhere.

I've got no idea why these managers behave the way that they do. Threatened or insecure, its no excuse to mistreat your subordinates! Posted on 20 Nov 2012 08:15

Social recruitment - what I've learned so far
Thanks for your very well-articulated reply.

While I agree referral recruitment is not a new concept, I do think formalizing the process through the use of a platform which equally represents both parties will significantly change its effectiveness.

Through Hiring Bounty the community has a platform that is dedicated to keeping them updated on the jobs on offer. Rather than hope an individual sees a tweet or remembers to send through a friend’s contact details, the site streamlines the process of referring. This process will be made even simpler as we move out of beta and launch additional features.

A platform also extends the network from which you can draw a referral. Even the best recruiter has a limited database and emailing everybody in that database for a referral is just another unnecessary interruption. As Hiring Bounty grows in popularity we are able to access the personal networks of an even wider group of people. This network is better informed of people’s career aspirations and is constantly up dating with movement in the industry, newly acquired skills and up to date contact details.

Jobs will continue to become more niche in their focus and as such referred candidates from people within the industry becomes the obvious source of quality candidates.

Again thanks for challenging our learnings.

Insecure, threatened managers treat subordinates unjustly
Awesome article Refilwe!

May I commend you for publishing this! You ROCK! :)
You have gone BOLDLY where 98% will not!

I am right there with you.

The majority of society suffer from an affliction I refer to head-in-sand-attitudis.

Their attitude: 'Speaking up is futile' combined with 'This it is not my problem'

Then sadly there are the helpless "silenced voices" - those people living in fear because of this abuse of power and the consequences...

I would like to share following lyrics;

All of us just sat back and watched it happen
Thinkin’, “It’s not my responsibility
To solve a problem that isn’t even about me.”

This is our problem

This is just one of them daily scenarios
In which we choose to close our eyes
Instead of doing the right thing
If we make a choice

To be the voice

For those who won’t speak up for themselves
How many lives would be saved, changed, rearranged?

Now it’s our time to pick a side
So don’t keep walking by, not wanting to intervene
‘Cause you just wanna exist and never be seen

So let’s wake up,
Change the world,

Our time is now…

Business lessons to be learned from 1time airline
I do not beleive that the staff and even management knew that the company was going into liquidation as I was in their ofices the day before and assured that everything was improving and even discussed sports proposals for some athletes I am working with. I had a very good meeting with their Customer Services Manager who could not have been more positive. However, I do believe that the Chairman 'Blackie' was fully aware of what was happening and I believe that he should be held personally responsible for refunding the losses.
