The proprietor, Topco Media, seeks the services of an editor (preferably female) for its leading publication, Top Women in Business and Government, currently published on an annual basis, but likely to change to publication on a bi-annual or even a quarterly basis. As its name suggests, the publication serves to research, identify and celebrate the achievements of women both in business and in government, and it functions as a resource of corporate and business data on gender empowerment. Applicants are sought who have a proven editorial background and can show a portfolio of published work, and who have a strong and a genuine interest in gender empowerment.
Editorial Mission
Build upon and grow the readership of the publication by simultaneously creating and satisfying an interest in all aspects of gender empowerment in the workplace, and in so doing, create an unbeatable platform for the publication's advertisers and business partners.
Detailed job description
• Research and plan content. This will entail seeking out and writing or commissioning the best women's interest stories of the year, and ensuring high interest, thought-provoking, topical editorial content.
• Commission or source illustrative material, including photographs and artwork.
• With members of the design team, visualise and realise an attractive publication.
• Maintain an up-to-date editorial house style manual, and edit all submissions rigorously in-line with established editorial policy guidelines.
• Ensure that all editorial is error-free.
• Produce the editorial content to a given budget, and contribute towards the commercial success of the publication.
• Work closely with members of the Research Department to research and identify gender empowered organizations.
• Work closely with Topco Media's Events Management team to mount the annual Top Women Awards Programme, culminating in the gala awards evening.
• Assist in the preparation of print-based and web-based marketing material for the publication; act as a member of the management team at selected promotional and marketing presentations.
• Monitor the business and governmental environment, and network with women achievers.
The position is based in the Cape Town area, in an attractive rural office setting. The Editor will report to the Head of Production, and will be expected to undertake some traveling, primarily to Johannesburg.
