General Manager - Operations

Job description

Main function: 

To lead, manage and enhance business manufacturing operations whilst ensuring that strategic objectives are aligned in order to maximise productivity, efficiency, profitability and quality.

Operations management
  • Oversee and monitor the performance of the regional operations in line with agreed productivity, quality and profitability targets
  • Manage the inbound and outbound process to ensure efficient inventory control and stock counts
  • Direct and coordinate activities of the plants in the region to enhance efficiency, quality, service and cost-effective management of resources including any outsourced activities
  • Implement corrective action plans to enhance performance
  • Review performance activity and financial reports to determine progress and status in attaining objectives and revise plans according to current conditions
  • Serve as a liaison between, and support the various strategic departmental functions being finances, marketing and sales, procurement, logistics and distribution and human resources
  • Ensure internal control policies are being followed at plant level and implement corrective action where necessary
  • Manage the region's distribution of product to its customers with special emphasis on
  • The efficient and cost-effective distribution of product to customers
  • The appropriate use of company-owned vehicles versus external courier services
  • Striking the appropriate balance between quality customer service and the management of costs related thereto
  • Establishing service level agreements with courier companies and negotiating favourable rates
  • Implement executive initiatives at plant level in order to align plant performance with group strategic goals
  • Recommend changes to operational procedures, policies and standards to enhance branch operations
  • Responsible for day-to-day activities and functions
Facilities management
  • To coordinate and oversee the safe, secure and environmentally sound operations and maintenance of company assets in a cost-effective manner aimed at long-term preservation of the asset value:
  • These range from property strategy solutions, space management, administration and contract management of security and cleaning contracts
  • Practice safe working procedures
  •  Adherence to company policies and procedures
  • Firm grasp of plant operations and internal controls
  • Ensure plant operational compliance with company policies
  • Efficiencies
  • Operational flows
  • Quality management
Corporate image
  • Travel regularly to plants in the region, i.e. remain in personal contact with plant management
  • Provide cohesion between different managerial operating styles and group strategic philosophy
  • Review subordinates monthly reports and report any concerns, issues raised and opportunities identified
  • Ensure that the plant's management of product quality and operational procedures are aligned with the groups quality standard
  • Feasibility/viability studies of plants in new strategically defined areas or specialised operations
  • Provide leadership and guidance to direct reports
  • Perform manager performance reviews
  • Monitor costs and expenditures as required
  • Manage new initiatives and programs to ensure the timely delivery of objectives
  • Define plant goals and objectives, ensure that appropriate plans are in place to achieve these goals and consistently monitor and measure performance against stated objectives


Leadership experience, skills and competencies required:
  • Diploma or degree in clothing/textiles (technology or manufacturing)
  • At least eight years of proven experience in managing clothing manufacturing production plant/s as well as experience in general management functions
  • Successful track record of overseeing and leading multiple manufacturing units advantageous
  • Attention to detail and a systematic approach to business
  • Ability to think outside the 'box'
  • The ability to understand and grasp issues and able to come up with solutions that meet the executive- and shareholders’ - expectations
  • Good understanding of asset management, financial knowledge and have a 'hands-on' operating style
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
