Job description

The Account Director (AD) is an integral part of the ACG team. He/she takes the lead on project management, ensuring projects are completed on time and on budget. An excellent writer, the AD leads content creation for client projects. He/she identifies scope for growth of accounts from a revenue standpoint, offering and delivering new services to clients, as well as bringing in new business. Junior staff rely on the AD for guidance and he/she assigns and monitors the delivery of tasks. Their goal is to facilitate client retention and further growth of the agency.

Project Management
  • Plan budgets and activities for account management
  • Lead project delivery from start to finish, ensuring excellence in quality while keeping track of budget
  • Put in place a simple project management system that keeps the team accountable in terms of schedule and budget
  • Communicate weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly progress to the Managing Director and, where necessary, external stakeholders.
Client Management
  • Liaise with clients at a senior level on a day-to-day basis; serve as point of contact
  • Lead the team to provide the utmost level of client service
  • Push clients, and the agency, creatively and strategically
  • Resolve issues to maintain and strengthen client trust
  • Build and maintain client relationships.
  • Draft press releases, thought leadership articles and other communications materials.
Business Development
  • Contribute to the growth strategy of the agency
  • Promote the expansion of the business with existing clients by negotiating increased scope of accounts and fees, and pitching new services
  • Work with Managing Director to generate new accounts
  • Develop proposals for new business opportunities.
Team management
  • Set goals and objectives for, and guide junior staff members in their daily tasks
  • Ensure junior staff are meeting client and agency objectives
  • Negotiate with affiliates and partners to fit budget needs
  • Guide Account Manager in negotiations with suppliers to maximize value and stay on-budget in the execution of projects.

  • A background in communications, advertising, journalism or marketing
  • Significant experience in professional client relationship management
  • Ability to plan and strategize at a senior level
  • Ability to bring in and manage new business
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills
  • Effective team management capabilities
  • An understanding of the media landscape in Africa and proven media relationships
  • Full understanding of budgeting and reporting on progress
  • Great negotiation skills
  • Working knowledge of MS Office and/or relevant software
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities with aptitude in fostering long-term relationships
  • Outstanding organizational and leadership skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in media, marketing, journalism or related field
