Mid-Level Digital Designer

Job description

We are an integrated digital agency who are looking for a mid-level digital designer to join our Cape Town team.

This is a creative role and as such the digital designer will have proven conceptual design skills, a prolific work rate and the ability to execute and deliver their creative work effectively in a deadline-driven environment.

With an experienced understanding of the technical requirements and limitations of digital communications, responsive design and designing for mobile devices, you will be responsible for creating, refining, and extending the visual design and user experience of various client’s websites, mobile applications, social media, and digital marketing assets.

Principal duties and responsibilities:

  • Work with our art director to conceptualise and execute designs that will advance our client’s products, business, marketing, and branding objectives and strategies
  • Take direction from the art director as well as work independently to explore and create successful designs
  • Provide user-centered design expertise from concept to delivery
  • Create multiple solutions that foster greater awareness, improved user experience (UX), and better interactions that meet the business and communication objectives outlined in a creative brief
  • Make recommendations about which design issues are critical and need escalation and articulate those that are most valid and worth pursuing
  • Leverage strong knowledge of web production and visual asset creation to facilitate the technical execution of designs
  • Must be able to collect/understand customer-led and technical requirements and translate this data into wireframes, mock-ups, and design prototypes
  • Provide production support for team members as needed
  • Start to develop best practices for overall team efficiency
  • Able to stay on project schedule to deliver projects on time and estimate/manage own time accurately and effectively
  • At least two+ years of within a digital agency environment
Minimum educational level:
  • Bachelor’s degree in digital design, graphic design, interaction design, or design related field of study


Competencies - skills, knowledge, and abilities
  • A demonstrable understanding of information architecture, wireframes, user experience (UX), usability and user interface (UI) design principles; can incorporate user research data in visual design
  • A strong experience in social media design and execution across all platforms
  • Hands-on expertise using Adobe software (Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat – InDesign, Flash, Dreamweaver is a definite plus), Mac OS X and Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint) – CSS/HTML coding tools is a plus
  • Have a strong understanding of CSS, HTML, front-end development and responsive design requirements and their limitations
  • Experience designing for content management systems; and working with asset management and online tracking tools, e.g. GIT, SASS, ProofHQ, etc.
  • Demonstrate an attention to detail in all aspects of digital design with a very high level of accuracy
  • Demonstrable understanding and experience in HTML prototyping; Google Analytics and Google Tag manager

  • Possess excellent project management skills; be able to work on multiple projects and reprioritise as needed
  • Demonstrate willingness to contribute to the team and understand the value of other creative disciplines and how they work with design – be a team player
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills, especially presenting creative work for critique internally and to clients
  • Accept feedback with grace and constantly strive to improve personal performance
