PR account manager: associate, media relations: b2b and financial sectors.
Role overview

Weber Shandwick has an exciting opportunity for an Account Manager (AM) to join our team. We are looking for a collaboration-minded person with excellent media relationships, account management, strategic/tactical planning, team collaboration, and digital/social skills to help support key financial and corporate client portfolio.

He/she will be expected to deliver tactical inputs to clients while providing daily management services to clients. Additionally to assist the Weber Shandwick in-country hub for global campaigns.

The candidate is expected to have at least four to five years’ experience in the B2B/financial and from time to time assist in the consumer, healthcare and technology sectors.

Main duties:

Understanding the agency
  • Understand the Inter Public Group and the South African shareholding structure
  • Understand Weber Shandwick in Africa and the EMEA credentials
  • Familiarisation with FCB’s corridor companies
  • Understand and use the Weber Shandwick proprietary tools of Firebell, Mywebershandwick and KIT 
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of other Agency departments e.g Digital
  • Ensure appropriate admin/briefing/scheduling procedures required by other Agency departments are adhered to at all times
  • Understand the basis of Agency financial management and terms of business for client accounts to ensure management of account profitability
  • Understand the contract deliverables per client
  • Understand CHASE as a tool for account profitability
  • Understand the new account on boarding process
  • Familiarise yourself with the necessary templates used for various forms of client reporting eg. Contact reports, Monthly reports etc
  • Understand the agency filing system and file accordingly – all documents to be saved on the drive and not on individual Pc’s.
Client servicing
  • Develop and maintain a close and productive relationship with key client contacts, acting with integrity at all times
  • Identify and deal with problems as they arise, appreciating when it is appropriate to involve or notify the PR Account Director or Managing Director
  • Provide day to day contact with key client contacts and manage any PR Account Executive/Junior Associate involvement with clients
  • Provide day to day contact with key media and manage any PR Account Executive/ Junior Associate involvement with the media
  • Ensure client requests are dealt with promptly and that expectations are managed in terms of speed, delivery and quality of response – a response time of 2hrs is the expectation
  • Ensure client requests are developed into internal briefs using specified Agency documentation, procedures and CHASE, as appropriate
  • Manage all jobs to ensure they are scheduled on time and to budget and are monitored using appropriate admin procedures via CHASE
  • Ensure the issuing and distribution of regular ‘work in progress’ reports
  • Ensure contact reports of key meetings and telephone conversations are issued within 24 – 48 hours
  • Ensure that client monthly reports are delivered within the time frame according to the contract eg. Within 5 working days after the last day of the month
  • Ensure research and background information is prepared for briefs/ pitches/ presentations
  • Develop a thorough understanding of client’s business
  • Daily media monitoring with a purpose – proactive suggestions to client
Programme delivery
  • Produce well written and relevant press releases, features, news releases and social media content
  • Be able to understand and use the media/bloggers/influencers that are relevant to our clients
  • Execute tasks with reference to media, blogger, influencers outreach and client deadlines
  • Focus on media trends both on and off line outside of their immediate environment
  • Execute tasks with reference to media and client deadlines
  • Keep up to date about the movement of relevant journalists and the changes in the media environment and make the necessary updates on relevant media lists
Client profitability
  • Ensure all quotations for work are accurate
  • Ensure client invoicing is correct and timely
  • Obtain the necessary PO’s for each Cost Estimate issued
  • Issue monthly invoicing to client
  • Keep track of payment schedule
  • Time management of any PR Account Executive/ Junior Associate – CHASE timesheets need to be accurate and completed on time
Quality management
  • Ensure work for clients from the PR team and any internal or external suppliers meet acceptable levels of quality and timeliness and are within budgetary guidelines
Administration and financial management
  • Ensure a systematic and efficient filing system is maintained
  • Manage the maintenance of job numbers and job records
  • Ensure accurate quotations are produced and distributed at the beginning of any campaign
  • Monitor ongoing costs throughout individual campaigns
  • Manage the production of accurate and timely invoices, dealing with any billing or financial query as appropriate
  • Manage the smooth running of day to day activities
  • Monitor actual figures against projected revenue and notify account director/managing director of any increase or decrease and reasons why
  • Monitor profitability of individual jobs to manage current and future account profitability
  • Complete CHASE timesheets at the end of each day and submit for approval at the end of every week
Team management and development
  • Assist account director in managing assigned staff and developing them for roles of greater responsibility
  • Give constructive feedback on the performance of assigned staff and identify appropriate training requirements
Self-development
  • Proactively pursue self-development opportunities
  • Assume joint responsibility with Line Manager for regularly reviewing performance and personal development
  • Demonstrate a positive, solutions orientated attitude
  • Make use of Weber Shandwick training tools
In addition to the duties and responsibilities listed, the jobholder is required to perform other duties as assigned by management.

Requirements

Skills and experience:
  • Demonstrable experience of working in key PR and marketing disciplines
  • Have a sound knowledge/experience with a keen interest in the financial sector 
  • Have a good understanding with experience of all new media platforms - digital/social skills
  • Demonstrate an effective understanding of how PR integrates with the agency’s range of disciplines
  • Passion about the industry demonstrated by a genuine interest in and enthusiasm for all aspects of marketing and communications
  • Ability to articulate what makes a good PR campaign or communication initiative
  • Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal
  • Previous team management experience
  • PC literate
  • Proven track record in growing PR business
  • Experience of dealing with clients and colleagues at senior/executive level 
  • Advanced presentation skills
  • Negotiation and influencing skills
  • Excellent team management experience
  • Commercial acumen and business understanding
