Reputation boost for Ogilvy as ODMA shows success

[Herman Manson: @marklives] The Ogilvy Digital Marketing Academy (ODMA), an educational initiative between Ogilvy and lecturer and digital strategist Dave Duarte, has celebrated its first year of contributing to the "geekification of the ad industry," as Duarte had joked it would do when the academy in its current form was first launched in early 2011.

Make sure your slides are the itch, not the scratch

[Douglas Kruger] Microsoft's proud creation suffers a similar PR problem to money. Universally acknowledged as the root of all evil, money was falsely accused. The original verse actually states that "the love of money is the root of all evil." Similarly, it is the obsessive, compulsive, yearning, mindless, brainwashed, mewling, needling, squirming, frightening need for PowerPoint that is the real problem. Not PowerPoint itself.

Top five things learned at SxSW 2012

[trigger/isobar goes to SxSW] Karin Botta: Digital marketing is a lot more than an entertaining Facebook tab, some cute tweets, or a campaign that relies solely on user-generated content. It's more dynamic, involves real people, but mostly needs to be as simple as possible. It was this, and the next five ideas, that had the biggest impact upon me during my time at SxSW in Austin last week.

Google vs gut: how to screen clients

[Jo Duxbury] Whether you're a big agency, or a small one, or a freelancer, chances are that when a new client starts nosing around, contemplating working with you, they'll do some background checking. After all, they're going to be giving you money and they need to know you'll be able to deliver what they order. Funny, though, how rarely this screening happens in reverse.

"Marketing's common sense - anyone can do it." Well, maybe not.

[Sharon Keith] When you see the finished object - the advertising campaign, the packaging, the new flavour, the shiny social media campaign, it's tempting to think that these things are relatively simple and straightforward to plan and execute. But those of us "in the know" know. It's a long hard slog.

Internships: making the right choice

[Charl Thom] It's that time of the year when the inboxes of HR departments and agency execs start overflowing with internship applications. Beginning your career with the right agency is arguably one of the most important decisions you'll make. As a starting point, consider culture, courage, vision and brand as a non-negotiable.

Four ways to use specificity in your communication

[Tiffany Markman] My grandmother was a remarkable woman. Outspoken. Opinionated. She had a tracksuit. (And she wasn't a tracksuit person. She was a dress-with-matching-belt person. She wore anoraks. And sensible shoes.) The tracksuit was blue. But every time you suggested that she wear her blue tracksuit, she'd snap, "It's not blue. It's turquoise, dammit!" She was right. Here are four quick and easy ways to write and speak specifically...

Marketers: don't take your script on stage

[Douglas Kruger] Here's your challenge: 120 rural women, all over the age of 40, packed into a community hall in the middle of nowhere. They're hot, they're sweaty and they've gathered to hear another speaker, but your bank is sponsoring the event. Get them excited about opening an account with you. Go!

[Sustainability media seminar]: Can SA drift towards a green economy?

[Issa Sikiti da Silva: @sikitimedia] South Africa, Africa's economic powerhouse and the world's 11th greenhouse gas (GHG) emitter, will have to restructure its economy away from capital and energy-intensive growth and strive to shift it towards the green line due to severe implications of climate change, Nedbank chief economist Dennis Dykes said last week in Sandton, Johannesburg, while addressing a media seminar on sustainability.

Eight guidelines for report writing

[Tiffany Markman] You'll agree that what I'm about to say is not rocket science. Here goes: a report is written to be read by someone else. Now, if this is the central goal, a lot of your focus should fall on that 'someone else', and on giving them what they need, in a format that'll work for them, so that they read what you've written and rapidly agree with it.

Steve Jobs - how to speak like the master

[Douglas Kruger] While the world mourns the loss of a great technical visionary, speakers the world over are also mourning the loss of an incredible oratory talent. Steve Jobs wasn't just an iGenius. He also knew how to hold a crowd.

Stop using varsity degrees as barricades to advertising, media

[Chris Moerdyk: @chrismoerdyk] A couple of days ago here on Bizcommunity, one of South Africa's leading admen, Mike Abel, reflected on all the TVC that were entered into this year's Loeries, saying that nothing stood out for him. He yearned for the days of yore, when this country produced outstanding TV advertising. And for the past few years, many leading lights in the media industry have been bemoaning declining standards of journalism.

Why is there so much bad language on social media?

[Jo Duxbury] I don't mean four-letter words and the awful vitriol in News24.com's comment section. I mean the multitude of typos, spelling mistakes, grammatical errors and disregard for punctuation that pepper Facebook and Twitter.

What does a copywriter do anyway?

[Tiffany Markman] I'm asked this question a lot. Usually after I explain that, "No, the copywriter isn't the person who puts the little 'c' into the circle. That's copyright." I'm also often asked the difference between copywriters and editors. So, in case you've ever wondered what we do, or whether you need one of us to assist you, here's some insight for you.
