Down, out, but so proud

Down, out, but so proud
[Nick Said] And so the dream comes to an end, not with a dispiriting defeat, but rather a morale-boosting win that should at least bode well for the short-term future of South African football.

For SA TV viewers, it's #Bafana or nothing
[Herman Manson] Research on South African audience figures for the opening matches of the 2010 FIFA (Don't you dare wear Orange!) World Cup, conducted by audience measurement company Nielsen, reveal that while South African TV viewers were enchanted by Bafana Bafana, interest dropped significantly for follow-up matches.

Portugal spanks N Korea
[Nick Said] It has been some World Cup so far hasn't it? Forget what has been happening on the pitch, we have had bust-ups with players and coaches, bust-ins with fans in dressing-room, 'discussions' over the ball and vuvuzelas, and now finally ... finally ... somebody has been given a damn good thrashing.

Presenting to the undead: how to avoid audience disconnect

Presenting to the undead: how to avoid audience disconnect
[Douglas Kruger] It's about as much fun as making love to an unresponsive partner. Dead audiences. You sing, you dance, you juggle; they sit and stare. Some of them just think of England. What can you do to stop the life draining out of the room? How can you avoid that sinking sensation in your stomach every time they switch off?

It's a Francophile's folly

It's a Francophile's folly
[Brian Berkman] Franschhoek establishments take their French connection very seriously. Perhaps none more than the Franschhoek Country House & Villas that have created a Francophile's folly with fountains, lavender hedges and wrought-iron archways. This is a model for the French-country look and given the main house's historic use as a perfumery, not entirely inauthentic.

Bianca Wagener commented on 2010 ambush marketing: Bavaria does it again!

If I walk into a soccer stadium wearing name brand clothes I paid for, does that mean I can be arrested? This is the most ridiculous case I have ever heard besides when Fifa wanted Ferrari to take down a sign they had had up for 40 years and Ferrari threatened to leave Germany..Fifa is a money grabbing enterprise aimed at robbing the country that hosts its events...it does not support local business but charges an arm and a leg...I say if we have spent 4 billion on hosting this fiasco, anyone anywhere should be able to advertise and their basic human right to freedom of speech should not be encroached upon!

Independent's content model underwhelms

[Mandy de Waal] The Star, The Daily News, Cape Times, Pretoria News, Cape Argus and most other titles in the Independent News & Media (INM) stable literally took their tabloids online as an added-value proposition for subscribers. The result is an exact page-by-page replica of the print title that is both cumbersome and unwieldy to navigate or read. Experts describe the move as "outdated", "confused" and a "recipe for disaster".

2010 ambush marketing: Bavaria does it again!
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] Dutch brewery Bavaria has done what it did at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany: advertise its brand 'illegally' despite knowing very well that the practice amounts to ambush marketing. While in Germany, its 'marketers' did escape the long arm of the law, but this year in South Africa two Dutch women involved in the controversial marketing campaign were arrested, named and shamed.
