Education In brief South Africa

South Africa launches science edutainment show internationally

With his latest film project, Quarx, Jasper James of Screen Glue brings an original spin on science education by tackling physics and biology, as they have never been done before. James describes the series as a mischievous science-fuelled romp for the YouTube generation.

Quarx was originally conceived for a science broadcasting competition run by CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The first series has already been presold to CuriosityStream in the US, Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific, SRF in Switzerland, RTBF in Belgium, France Televisions, SVT Sweden and CT (Czech Republic) and is proudly supported by South Africa's dti. Cremer Van Dango and James Tovell direct the series, which is written by James, James Tovell and Rob Hockley.

Quarx is an international show. The characters, scenarios and visual humour all have a universal appeal and the video-blog style allows for easy versioning with stories driven by voiceover and dialogue behind the character's own cameras.
