Selected from his most recent book, Democrazy (published by Jacana), Zapiro (aka Jonathan Shapiro) will exhibit 40 of his graphics at the AVA Gallery in Cape Town from 29 September 2014. The exhibition describes - with fearless determination and precise clarity - a South Africa that, he writes, "was crazier than anything my imagination could conjure up." The hardest challenge of mastering this dangerous genre "has been to find that element of humour essential for effective cartooning in such debilitating events."
Pages from his notebooks presenting fascinating views into the creation of his characters and the increasingly absurd situations of their making, accompany the works on exhibition. During the course of his exhibition, Zapiro will also take his work into the Cape Town public realm.
