Men's Health Best Man has once again paid tribute to South Africa's great achievers - the men who make us proud and who shape our country. Leaders in six categories were honoured at the annual Men's Health Best Man leadership event held last night in Cape Town.

Now in its third year, Best Man recognises those who are successful in their field and are an inspiration to our readers. Award categories are: Sport; Business; Science and Technology; Arts and Culture; Public Service and Media.

The winners are:
  • Sport: Makhaya Ntini - voted Sportsman of the Year in 2005, Ntini has claimed his place as South Africa's key bowler and match winner.
  • Business: GT Ferreira - executive chairman of FirstRand Limited and the corporate, merchant and investment banking group.
  • Arts and Culture: Gavin Hood - director of the acclaimed Tsotsi, which recently won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
  • Science and Technology: Prof Tim Noakes - The "runner's guru" and UCT's professor of exercise and sports science.

  • Media: Jurgen Schadeberg - from his Fifties work on Drum, he has produced a lifetime of superb photography and now a book, Voices from the Land.

Lucas Radebe received a special achievement award for his contribution to South Africa on and off the soccer field. During his benefit year, Radebe has been raising funds for the Starfish Greathearts Foundation, the SOS Children's Village and the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
