M-Net and Supersport advertising

Is it only me who is irritated by the tedious onslaught of own-channel, self promotional advertising that envelops just about any sporting event broadcast on these channels.
I feel like - ' I'm watching your bloody channel, why do you think it's necessary to bludgeon me to death with it?'.

Filling unsold time with self promotion should be re-considered - it could be alienating viewers, not building loyalty.

All the channels do it - but that doesn't mean it's good sense-
From This is CNN is Discover thru MTv they all do it. Does it irritate? Goddam it does? Why do they do it? Cheap promotions I guess. There is oftem more promotion that content.

What else would they do with the time though? More programmes are expensive and clearly without advertising where does the money come from to fund these programmes that fill time between the adverts to make the money that we don't have to pay for the programmes to fill the... get my point

Without advertising there is more space -= a catch 22 position... got any ideas???

I can't think of one... Posted on 13 Mar 2003 15:01

Viewers are not stupid-
I agree with the sentiment. I know which channel I am watching and to see two of the four corners of the TV screen taken up with the Channel and Supersport logos is just too much. The score and time in one corner is enough.

It is an unwanted, constant reminder of the channel I am watching, as if I did not already know. I am involved in Advertising and the one constant that we talk about is that the viewing public are not idiots. Maybe this should be pointed out to both M-Net and Supersport. Posted on 13 Mar 2003 16:48

too much of a bad thing-
And how!!
Surely the decision makers have a little sense - it alienates me and certainly does nothing for the brand!! Posted on 13 Mar 2003 16:52

IT DRIVES ME NUTS ! -
Word cannot express the irritation I feel at these mindless, badly produced, pointless promo's.

ESPN is the absolute worst but SuperSport is nearly as stupid. They all look the same, sound the same and don't tell us a bloody thing.

My finger hits the channel button the second they pop onto screen - often leading me somewhere else where I stay !! Posted on 13 Mar 2003 17:13

Stand Up-
Everybody does it and it does drive home a message, sometimes we are too close to the industry that we don't see the wood for the trees, I took my 3 year old son to Ellis Park the other week, when they started playing "Stand up for the champions" his first response was "Supersport!", I say job well done!

It is not just TV that does it, but radio and print often fill the gaps and or cancellations with "house ads" 94.7 are a classic example.

What does piss me off is when the football screen has to shrink to the top right hand corner at a really tense moment, just to see my crap medical aid that find every excuse under the sun not pay a medical claim, yet they can find the money to intrude on my Saturday afternoon! "We are the champs we aaare weee aarrre!"-
I HATE THAT ADD! I HATE THAT DAMN STUPID SONG! and it never ends! I wonder if the guys at m-net can see on their ratings machine thingy or how ever the hell they pick up ratings, that I change the channnel the second that irratating neverending add comes up! What makes it even more stupid is the fact that "WE" in the song is England, not South Africa, people from England must be laughing their asses of when they see the add. Posted on 21 Jul 2004 09:07

And how about CNN?-
It's impossible to watch CNN without a book or some other distraction handy for the long minutes in between repeated headlines in which they blow their own trumpet. Whatever happened to that Al Jazeera deal? It would have been nice to see a new perspective.... Posted on 14 Mar 2003 12:27

it's not even funny-
At least if it was funny it would help. But it's so serious and boring. Why don't they use the unsold space for showing old ladies darning their husbands socks, this would provide more entertainment. Posted on 14 Mar 2003 13:05
at least this site makes me laugh-
now and then i get a good chuckle from this place. thanks. Posted on 17 Mar 2003 23:46
I love it-
I love the Supersport Ads. And yes, they do serve a purpose. Not only to advertise what they will be showing, but also to make SA feel Proudly SA even thoiugh we know that our teams are not really that great. The have a way of reaching their sporting target market where it envokes reaction....in the emotion of it all. DSTV have so much programming, that they need to remind viewers of whats comming, and what's on other channels. If you can't use your own medium to advertise your services, and believe that it will work, then how can you expect others to do so. Well Done Supersport!!!!!! Posted on 26 Nov 2003 08:41

They've been listening to their American brand consultants ...-
It makes sense for a true public broadcaster (like the BBC) to do self-promotion, since this is all they can do between shows (the SABC is NOT a public broadcaster in the same sense). But commercial broadcasters (like MNET) should limit the self-promo's to prevent 'promo-overload', guess they don't realise that after the 10th time a promo is shown in one hour, any half-intelligent viewer would lose interest in how wonderful the station says it is...
