IEC not in touch with SA roots

16 Jan 2004 13:0813 commentsBizLike
Is local not lekker for IEC after ten years of democracy? There is an IEC re-registor advert running on radio which encourages people to vote. The peculiar thing is the voice is that of American R&B singer.
It is disappointing how little organisations like the IEC think of our ten-year freedom and our local young icons.

It says so much about their proudness of South Africa.

What?-
Sorry boet/sis!I am at a loss as to which advert you are referring to. I think I have heard most of them and I have no recollection of an R& B singer's voice being used. Please enlighten me.

It's Lorcia Cooper-
Say What??????? There's two, one is Lorcia Cooper (Charmaine in Backstage) and the other is Khensani (something like that) A proud South African. Don't know what you've been listening to but I seriously doubt the IEC would've used a non-South African for this campaign - no matter how lame it is!!!!!! Posted on 19 Jan 2004 15:48

in touch ,lacking various elements-
I think it should actually be more infomative,Ms. Cooper appearing on the ad saying not voting is "dof" ,doesnt actualy reach home , I know trying to reach the young market by showing what they consider a role model mskes them look up and say hey thats the hot chick from backstage ,but young people do not realy understand the real reason of voting ,with comments like "If i dont vote ,what diffrence is it going to make" Issues that should be discussed in the ad should include ,why vote ,why register,if i vote what will I benefit as an individual ,and post elections how i can participate in Govement, this will lead to young people bieng politicaly involved leading to a nation of responsible adult voters

who ever decides on the topic for comment must at least do their home work...-
... the IEC is only using SA voices, pleaselet us not raise issues where ather eare none. I do not have a problem with raising issue about the quality of the adverts, but please, the voices are all those of South Africans. Posted on 19 Jan 2004 16:44

Not in touch with the roots-
I think i am not entirely in touch with my roots. In light of the info provided I apologise. Thought I heard something that tunes:"I am Alicia Keys..." . Maybe i was on that staff again. Posted on 20 Jan 2004 11:46

that brittle staff-
that staff isn't a good one to lean on. Half SA's problem is that staff. You could call NA or you could just stop, and save what's left of your brain and your seratonin. Posted on 6 Apr 2004 15:40

Transformation needed-
IEC cannot take a blame alone, it is the nature of our advertising agencies and the industry in general. It is corrupted by the elements of Western or European ideosyncrasy. For anything to be rated it should emulates something Europe and in this case, the very same ad. agency that has been tendered to produce a marketing plan from onset has gone wrong.
The advertising industry needs a serious transformation. There are quite a lot of adverts in both the print and electronic media that leave much to be desired. But as one try to understand the background of the agency that came up with a particular concept of such production, it is mostly all those agencies that lacks feasible transformation and always would undermine the democracy of our country. We need agencies with a true African connection both by deeds and aspiration.

If you want to understand the morals of the country, you should look at the country's types of adverts especially on the public modes of media. It is my view that within the advertising industry, there is still dominion by agents of non-progress and post-colonial arrogance. In this case IEC is just a receipient of the wrongs and ills of the industry. If we are serious about nation building and re-making of our continent,we should start to think of our true African identity and little things around us.There are a lot of resources that may be used in making this ambition come true unlike banking our hopes in the hands of Holliwood. We must stop looking down upon ourselves.

South Africa should just wake up!!! Posted on 20 Jan 2004 13:15
Whaaaat?-
Ntshavi, what do you mean Bru??? You are speaking politically correct rubbish - try and get out more! Posted on 21 Jan 2004 21:36

Transformation is the new F word-
What a load of crap buddy. If you want to see transformation, get on with it.

What is "African' - there wasn't much here to begin with so where would you like to start? Yes we follow Europe, what is wrong with that? One day we will hopefully be a united world, one in which ideas are equally accessible from all spheres and parts of the globe.

However in order to achieve this we all need to be speaking the same language and that is what is happening.

Know the story of the tower of babel? Well it bears mention in light of the way we protect all that is truly African - well besides a few despots, dictators and the couple of mangy lions left running about, not much is really African.

I know this is going to offend a whole bunch of people out there, but if it does you miss the point. Stop being so proud about 'Africa' that you miss the truth.

Oh, and have a great day. Posted on 22 Jan 2004 10:33

Transform is an F word...May be it's to you-
Hell yes you are right this has offended me a whole lot. What do you mean when you say there was not much here to begin with? Oh I know what you mean when your forefathers Jan van riebeck & them came here there was nothing much! Oh yeh! why would they travel so many miles to come to a nowhere land Sis/Bru. You are one of those people feeding overseas people lies that we live in forests and that there are lions running around. Yes we do have dictators like America has Bush and Europe has Tony Blair...stop insulting us and do what you came here for...getting rich ..What's your point anyway.

May be I missed your point blanc pls enlighten us. You said to the poor brother he must get on with the transformation...Do you know what transformation is? blancyyyyyy. Posted on 28 Jan 2004 13:56

Transform is an F word-
If you blanc think that you guys found nothing in Africa, how come you are so resistant to go back to your original land where your forefathers come from?
Coming to what you call reality, It is real that your forefathers came here to come steal, first they stole from their mother land by not completing the mission they were sent for, instead they settled in a land that they thought belonged to no one.It is a fact that this happens to be our land, all of it!!I must strongly mention that you guys are playing too much on us being so accomodative of you. what hope can the IEC have of being in touch with people who are not in touch with their own selves?-
why do you people (you are all people, I assume - no typing dogs, snakes, horses in the house? All homo sapiens, right?) insist on flying the banner of race hatred like this? Ntshavi, Blanc de noir, Tambudzai, wake up. There is no solution to be found in the small and selfish words you spit.
There are merits and abuses in africa, just as there are in "the west". If we were wise and generous, we would acknowlege this and work towards a beneficial blending of the better qualities of both. This black and white way of seeing things is counter-productive in the extreme.
Africa is still african enough to have it's own unique identity, and most of us are proud enough of our african-ness that it's doubtfull we'll ever become entirely western-assimilated. But in this age, in this new small world, it's foolish to think that we can sit in the peaceful shade of our thorn trees forever, undisturbed. Africa would have sought out the west eventually anyhow, if the west had not sought africa out first.
Let the west come to africa on africa's terms. Let them be welcome with open arms and hearts, not so that they can make us western, but so that they can take the better qualities of africa back with them and improve the west.

We're headed one of two ways on this planet, and on this continent, and in this country:
Towards a celebration of diversity and mutual respect, unconditionally;
or towards racial fundamentalism and despair.

Both Ntshavhi and Blanc de whatever are suffering from the same conditions - insecurity and selfishness. I feel for you both, with your small hearts and closed minds. It doesn't have to be that way, it's a choice you make.

Lejwe - the more we learn, the more we discover how little we know. There is a school of thought which suggests that all humankind began in africa. In which case, Blanc is indeed returned to the original land of his forefathers. You are playing the us and them game in terms of black and white, the exact same way the architects of apartheid did. Why do you want to find new ways to play old and nasty games?

Until Blanc and Ntshavhi can sit together and listen to one another, rather than just shout their differences across the divide of cyberspace, they will not find either peace or freedom.
They both are fixed in their "rightness", and will not consider other voices. They are israelis and palestinians and will murder one-another's children for generations to come, in the name of "rightness". And we will be caught in the crossfire.

This has nothing to do with the IEC, of course. But how can they be in touch with South Africans when so many South Africans are not in touch with their own selves, nevermind their country? Posted on 6 Apr 2004 15:27
