DAB pilot transmissions

DAB radio has been available on a test basis in Gauteng since 1997. One analogue VHF frequency will enable seven digital channels to broadcast in the same bandwidth. Why has it not been licensed here?
At the moment the tests being conducted by Sentech are on channel 13F. Stations like 702 can be heard in CD quality. This system has taken off in a big way in the UK, so why hasn't it been licenced here? Radio sales will be stimulated as new receivers are required. They used to be expensive but the price has fallen dramatically. Many more stations will be able to broadcast good quality signals.

The same is true for digital terrestrial TV. It is also available in Gauteng on a test basis. Once again several digital channels can fit into an analogue frequency enabling more stations on the air. The picture quality is also better. When can we enjoy the benefits of this new technology?

Terrestrial digital-
One of the reasons, I think, we haven't had any radio stations licenced is probably because of some criticism the system has received in the UK...You might find it interesting to note that it has not been launched in the US due to these and other factors.

Same thing can be said for terrestrial digital tv or at least the model that uses MPEG2 compression. The current test transmission over Joburg use this outdated CODEC which has been replaced recently by the more superior MPEG4 which allows for more channels to broadcast in a single band...this might make transition to HDTV for local channels much easier.
